EFL Learners’ Perception of Using Self-Study to Develop Speaking Skill

Background of
the Study
1. Speak in English is difficult for EFL learners.
2. The fact that the difficult depends on learners
themselves
3. Self-study is considered as an important skill that
learners must have to develop and progress in their
learning. Independent learners have open minds to
learn new things, not afraid of being different, work
cooperatively with others, and have developed skill in
note taking and remembering (Moore, 1973, as cited
in Wedemeyer, 1981).
4. Lack of opportunity to practice the speaking is a

Conclusion
1. This study aimed at investigate students’ perception and
preferences of self-study or teachers’ guidance to develop their
speaking skill.
2. The result showed that the students preferred both self-study
and teachers’ involvement.
3. The participants have positive perception about self-study and
value it’s concept even when they did not have experience in it.
4. The findings showed that learners cannot accomplish a study
plan design by themselves.
5. When asked about the techniques that are used to develop
speaking skill, the participants mostly suggested communicate
with the native speaker and do the listening practice.
Educational
Implication Self-study may help learners to make their
learning more effective and faster

Drive The teachers to provide activities that inspire the


students to become independent learners.

The teachers: Allow the teachers to recognize the students’ concerns and
