History of Settlements
1. What is the trend in human settlement
and urban development?
2. One hundred years ago, what fraction
of the world’s population lived in
cities?
3. What led to the development of the
first permanent towns and cities?
4. Where is most of the world’s future
population growth expected to
happen?
5. List three ways the video says that
cities need to change, in order to
accommodate future population
growth.
Settlement
Hierarchies and Service Provision
Key Understandings
1. Settlements can be placed into hierarchies. Settlements
at each tier of the hierarchy will have similar
characteristics in terms of population size, service
provision and ability to provide high order goods and
services.

2. Larger settlements will have sizable populations. This

will allow for the provision of a large range of high
order comparison goods and services due to threshold
populations being met. In turn, this will make the
METACOGNITION CORNER settlement attractive and give it a large sphere of

Activate Hierarchies are when things are ranked in order of importance. Place the people in the
example below into the correct order for the hierarchy pyramid.
