CIRCLE

Definition
 Circle: the set of all points in a plane that
are at a fixed distance form a fixed point,
the center, in the plane

 Standard Form for Equation of a Circle

(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2 where (h,k) is
the center of the circle and r is the radius.
Circle whose center is the origin

Check point 1: Write the standard form of

the equation of the circle with center (0,0)
and radius of 4.
Circles not Centered at (0,0)
 Check point 2. A circle centered at (-2,5)
with a radius 7, has what equation?

2 2
( x  2)  ( y  5)  49
Example

Check Point 3: Write the standard form of

the equation of the circle with center (5, -6)
and radius 10.
Example
Check point 4. Write the equation of the circle
whose center is located at (6,4) and has radius
5.
Example
Try to do it mentally
Determine the center and radius
Check point 5. What is the center and radius of
a circle whose equation is ( x  2) 2  ( y  6) 2  4 ?

center = (2,-6) and radius=2

Example

Check point 6: Find the center and

radius of the circle whose equation is
( x  3)2  ( y 1)2  12

Check point 7: Find the center and

radius of the circle whose equation is
( x 1)2  ( y  3)2  18
Try to do it mentally

12 (2,5)
25 (0,7)
17 (15,-8)
18 (-11,-6)
14 (-4,9)
Converting General Form to
Standard Form

 Standard Form is achieved by

Completing the Square.
(a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2
Review: Completing the Square
 Find the value of c that makes x2 + 12x + c a perfect
square. Then write the trinomial as a perfect square.
 Think: What is half of b?
 Square this number to find c.

 Try this one: Find the value of c that makes x2 - 16x +

c a perfect square. Then write the trinomial as a
perfect square.
Steps for Completing the Square
1) Re-write equation in (x2 + x) + (y2 + y) = r2 form.
(Move any constants to the right side.)
2) Find half the coefficient of x. Square this number.
Add this to both sides of the equation.
3) Find half the coefficient of y. Square this number.
Add this to both sides of the equation.
4) Re-write the left hand side in (x – h)2 + (y – k)2
form; simplify the right side.
5) Find the center (h,k) and radius, r.
Example: Watch and listen.

 x2 + y2 – 2x – 6y = 2
Trial 1

x2 + y2 - 4x – 4y – 1 = 0.
Trial 2

(x-4) +(y-3) =36

2 2
Trial 3

4x +4y +40x-32y=5
2 2

(x+5)2+(y-4)2 =169/4
Individual Activity

Use the information provided to write the

standard form of each circle.
1. x2 + y2 + 2x = 24y -120
2. 9y2 + 84y + 42x = -65 -9 x2
3. Center:(-11,-8) & radius: 4
4. Center: (-6,-15) & radius:
Individual Activity
Assignment

Give the standard equation of the circle given each

condition and sketch the graph. Use graphing paper,
compass and ruler for the accurateness of graph.

1.Ends of the diameter (-7, -5) and (-1,-7)

2.Center: (-5,2) & circumference : 8π
3.Center:`(2,-4) & point on circle:( -7,-1)
4.Center; (-1,2) & tangent to x =-5
5.Center: (-5,4) & tangent to y = -7
