Ambient Air Quality Monitoring

By
Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control
Committee, Kashmir
 Jammu and Kashmir Pollution Control Committee,
Kashmir having its mandate under Air (Prevention and
Control of Pollution) Act-1981, has taken a step
forward by monitoring the Ambient Air Quality in
Kashmir Province to assess the level of air pollutants .

 Air quality in Srinagar- a non-attainment city is

deteriorating day by day mainly due to vehicular
emissions, industrial activities, road dust and dust
emitted from other developmental activities like
construction and demolition of buildings, bridges and
repairing of roads etc. The higher level of PM10 and
PM 2.5 are mainly due to the above reasons.
 The Air laboratory of JKPCC Kashmir has established
four (04) permanent Air Quality Monitoring Stations
in the year 2008-09 under the National Air Quality
Monitoring Programme (NAMP) in order to measure
PM10 concentrations.

 Further, for carrying out monitoring of PM2.5 in

Srinagar city, five (05) Ambient Air Quality Monitoring
Stations were established in the year 2017 under the
State Air Quality Monitoring Programme (SAMP).
Location sites of PM10 and PM2.5 Stations
In order to strengthen the monitoring of Air Quality, Eleven (11) more
stations were installed under NAMP in all Districts of Kashmir Province

A big Triumph of JKPCC was to install Online CAAQMS at
Rajbagh Office in July 2021
It measures
pollutants
such as SO2,
NO2, NH3,
CO, O3, VOC
and
particulate
matter viz,
PM 10 and
PM 2.5.
As per the Hon`ble High Court directions, Air Lab is also conducting Noise Level
Monitoring regularly at ten different sites in Srinagar city as mentioned below:-

Difficulties Facing By The Air Laboratory

 Man power resource at all newly installed stations in Districts to be allocated on

priority basis.

 Transportation facility to be given for carrying gaseous air samples from Districts
to Air lab of Regional Office.

 Continuous Power supply (with Stabilizers) to be provided during winter season

at all new stations installed in Districts.

 Station facilities for field workers in order to carry out air sampling smoothly.
