Numerical practice of

properties of fluid
Course Title = Fluid Mechanics
Course Code = FST-2022
Course In charge = Ms. Khadija Aijaz Siddiqui
Numericals:
Q1. Calculate the specific weight, density and specific gravity of one liter of a
liquid which weighs 7 N.

Q2. Calculate the density and specific weight of one liter of petrol of specific
gravity 0.7.

Q3. The space between two square flat parallel plates is filled with oil. Each side
of the plate is 60 cm. The thickness of the oil film is 12.5 mm. The upper plate
which moves at 2.5 meter per sec requires a force of 98.1 N to maintain the
speed. Determine the dynamic viscosity of the oil, also calculate the kinematic
viscosity of the oil if the specific gravity of the oil is 0.95.
Formulas

• Specific weight : γ = Weight (W)/ Volume(V)

• Density : ρ = Mass (m) / Volume(V)

• Specific Gravity : S.G= Density of fluid / Density of water

• Shear stress () = Viscosity ( ) ₓ S h e a r R a t e( d u / d y )

Give a try to solve the numericals by yourself as all the concepts
have been cleared , incase of any problem, solutions have been
provided in further slides with explanation.

at that point is 0.2 per second.
• Q2. A plate 0.025mm distant from a fixed plate, moves at 60 cm/s and
requires a force of 2N/m2 to maintain this speed. Determine the fluid
viscosity between the plates.
Answers
• 1. viscosity=1.226 Ns/m2
Kinematic viscosity=0.125x10^-2
m2/s
• 2. viscosity= 8.33x10^-5 Ns/m2
