AC GENERATOR

• AC generators are used to generate very

high voltages,
• while DC generators are used to
generate relatively lower voltages
AC MOTOR VS DC MOTOR

AC GENERATOR ROTATING TYPE
1. Armature rotating type 2. Field rotating type
TYPES OF INDUCTION MOTOR
ASYNCHRONOUS MOTOR
• Induction motors are referred to as
‘asynchronous motors’ because they
operate at a speed less than their
synchronous speed. So the first thing to
understand is – what is synchronous
speed?
• The rotating magnetic field produced in
the stator will create flux in the rotor,
hence causing the rotor to rotate. Due to
the lag between the flux current in the
rotor and the flux current in the stator, the
rotor will never reach its rotating
magnetic field speed (i.e. the synchronous
speed).
• Synchronous speed is the speed of
rotation of the magnetic field in a rotary
machine, and it depends upon the
frequency and number poles of the
machine. The induction motor always
runs at speed less than its synchronous
speed.
SPEED FORMULA
CHARACTERISTICS
• Speed- Less than synchronous speed. Decreases
with increasing load.
• Power factor - Operates at only lagging power
factor.
• Efficiency - good
• Cost - cheaper
• Starting- self starting
• Speed control - Can be controlled to small units.
SYNCHRONOUS MOTOR
CHARACTERISTICS

No Aspects Synchronous motor

1 Speed Synchronous speed constant. Independent

of load condition.

2 Power factor Operates at all power factors whether

lagging or leading.
3 Efficiency Very good.
4 Cost Costlier.
5 Starting Not self-starting.
6 Speed control No question.
7 Application Used for mechanical load and also to
improve power factor as synchronous
condenser.
CAPACITOR MOTOR
CAPACITOR MOTOR
• 1. Capacitor start
• 2. Capacitor Run
• 3. Capacitor start run
REVERSING 3 PHASE MOTOR
The D.O.L method of starting is usually restricted to smaller size
motors. The large starting current can cause excessive voltage
drop in the supply lines and disturbances to the supply voltage.
The method is used in motors having capacity between 0.5Hp
and 3Hp.

1. Contactor, K1 will be energize when push button ‘start’ is

press.
2. After the push button ‘start’ depress, K1 still energize as
auxiliary contact normally open at K1 acting as a holding
contact.
3. Contactor, K1 will be deenergize when push button “stop’
was pushed.
4. L1 will ‘ON’ at ‘OFF’ state.
5. L2, will ‘ON’ and L1 will ‘OFF’ at ‘ON’ state.
6. L3 will ‘ON’ , L1 and L3 will ‘OFF’ at overload state.
