Factoring a Polynomial With a Common Factor

To find out how this is done look at the given example below.
EXAMPLE 1 Get the factors of the expression
ab + ac .
STEP 1 Factor out each term and get the GCF of the terms in the
given  expression.
ab = a · b
ac= a · c
GCF = a

STEP 2 Take out a from the polynomial by dividing

each term by a
 ab+ac=a(b+c)
Factoring Common Monomial Factor
ab + ac = a (b+c)

FACTORING
DIFFERENCE OF
TWO SQUARES
Remember the factored form of a polynomial that is a
difference of two  squares is the sum and difference
of the square roots of the first and last  terms.

For a binomial to be a difference of two

squares, two conditions must hold.
1. There must be two terms that are
both squares. Examples are 9a2, 25a4,81
and x2.
2. There must be a minus sign between
the terms.
Find the factors of each expression.
Common Monomial Factoring Difference of
Factoring (CMF). Two Squares.
1. 8a+10a2 1. x2 – 1
2. 6n2+9n 2. 9y2 – 16
3. 16p4+4p6 3. 4x2 – 25y2
4. 25m3+5m 4. 36x2 – 49
5. 15n3+5n4 5. a2 – 81
