Preparing to debate
A debate is a formal discussion of a topic. Before a debate each team needs to think about the topic and plan their
argument. A chairperson controls the debate.
• The words in the box will be useful for your debate. Write the words in the correct section of the idea wheel.

• Look at the debating topic in the diagram below and decide if you are ‘for’ it (you agree with it) or ‘against’ it
(you disagree with it).

• Read the topic for a debate and think of three arguments for and against the debating topic. Add them to the flow
chart below.
The Topics :
1) You can’t learn very well without someone
helping you to understand.
2) Nowadays, you can find everything you need
on the internet.
3) It is important for people to learn to study on
their own with no teacher.
4) There aren’t enough schools and classrooms for
the high number of students. You don’t need a
school to learn online.
5) It’s difficult to discuss ideas on the computer.
6) Some students live a long way from a school. It
is difficult for them to get to school.
7) Going to school isn’t about learning a subject.
It’s also about learning social skills.
