GROUPING
OR CLASSIFICATION
Ali divided the rides into two groups: the rides that can move and
the rides that do not move. This is called grouping or
classification.

Not Riding Riding

Sorting or Grouping
Classification or grouping is a process of sorting individual
items into groups or.These groups or classes are made on the
basis of common qualities. The member of group have similar
qualities.
Ali has put the swing, see-saw, merry-go-round and
rider in the group of rides that can move.
Examples Of Classification
He has put the monkey bars and the slide in the group of rides that do not move
be For sorting the rides into groups,
Ali followed these scientific steps.
1. He observed the objects (rides) closely.
2. He found out that some objects (rides) shared some common qualities or
features (they moved)while the remaining objects (rides) shared some
other qualities (they did not move).
3. He made groups of the objects (the rides) that shared common features.
Their common feature became the reason for his grouping or classification
Let's be a
Scientist
We can sort any set of objects into two or more groups using the three steps below
1. Observe how the objects are similar and different.
Scientists havemade groups of plants, animals and many other objects using their common
features. This makes it easier to study them because studying a group is easier than studying large
number of individual objects.
2. Find out the common feature or features.
3. Groups the object that share a common feature or features Items present in the section

In the Park

See-saw Riding Monkey bar

Ali has come to the park today. There are a lot of children playing and enjoying
themselves in the park. In the park, there are swings, seesaws, merry-go-rounds,
slides, monkey bars and spring riders. All looks at them carefully. He notices that
some of these rides move while others do not. He takes out his pocket diary and
pen and begins to make a T-chart for making a bar graph
Stop And Ask Yourself
1. Define classification.
2. What are the three steps of classification?
3. Why is classification or grouping useful in science?
4. Classify the following items in a T-chart. Follow the same process
that Ali used for classifying rides.

Sorting objects in the
Bedroom
what is the Question?
How can the things in my bedroom be sorted into groups?
What do you think is the answer?
what do you need ?
Objects in the Bedroom
What will you do ?
Make a list of all the objects. Observe each object closely. See how it is similar or different from
the other objects. Group the objects with common features in a table .Name the groups
what happened ?
make a bar graph to report your findings.
what did you feel out?
Salman is at the supermarket. He can see
different display boards that give information
about the kind of items displayed in each row.
Salman has learnt that this is called
classification. Each row contains one class of
items. Now he is trying to figure out the
common features on the basis of which each
group is made. The table that Salman has
made is given on the next page.
Help him complete it.

You
