INTRODUCTION

This presentation will help

you understand the
importance of Articles and
how to use it correctly. By the
end, you will be an expert at
identifying articles and using
them in your writing.
WHAT ARE ARTICLES?

Articles are words that come before a

noun to indicate the type of reference
being made. There are three types of
articles: definite, indefinite, and zero.
This slide will explain each type of
article and how to use them correctly.
DEFINITE ARTICLE

The definite article (the) is

used before a noun to
indicate that the identity of
the noun is known to the
'The' reader.
‘THE’
The definite article is the word
"the." It is used before a noun
to define it as something
specific (e.g., something
previously mentioned or known,
something unique, or something
being identified by the
speaker).
EXAMPLES:

The Pope is visiting Russia.

The moon is very bright tonight.
Who is the president of France?
Indefinite Articles

‘a’ ‘an’
INDEFINITE ARTICLES ‘A/AN’
The indefinite article is used to refer to something for the
first time or to refer to a particular member of a
group or class.

a (before a singular noun beginning with a

consonant sound)
a toy a book a house

an (before a singular noun beginning with a vowel

sound) an operation
an idea an apple an umbrella
Here, I made some examples to better explain:

•An apple a day keeps the doctor away

•A kiss will remove the pain
•An airplane flew over our house.
•She was holding a book.
ZERO ARTICLE
Sometimes it is possible to have a noun phrase with
NO article—the so-called "ZERO article". In
English grammar, the term zero article refers to
an occasion in speech or writing where a noun or
noun phrase is not preceded by an article (a, an,
or the). The zero article is also known as the zero
determiner.

I need a bowl of rice. ← indefinite article

I like the rice in this restaurant. ← definite article
I eat rice every day. ← ZERO article
Example Sentences:
Here are some example sentences showing
the ZERO article in context.
