Challenges
In 2009, the board of governors of the International Air Transport
Association (IATA), took a milestone decision to adopt three specific targets
to mitigate GHG emissions from aviation:
• Average improvement in fuel efficiency of 1.5% per year from 2009 to
2020.
• A cap on aviation CO2 emissions from 2020.
• Reduction in net CO2 emissions of 50% by 2050

• In 2005, task force Established to assess
potential climate change impacts to business
revenues and reputation.
• In 2008, the Environmental Affairs Department
established & developed the sustainability
strategy road map in 2009.
• SD strategy to build awareness within the
organization and cascade authority and
accountability down the organizational hierarchy.

• Progressive retirement of older aircraft.
• Improving efficiencies in engine technology and maintenance. Example: A330 engine modifications saved 11,000 tons
of CO2 per year
• Aircraft maintenance. Example: Core washing of engines, weight management, use of alternative base coat exterior
paint.
• Flight route and speed optimization, reducing taxi times and onboard weight.

2019 PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS


FLYgreener
Program
• Fly Greener programme enables passengers to balance out their
carbon footprint by carbon emission calculations for specific flights.
The financial contributions go directly to fund third-party projects of
Cathay Pacific that help to offset the CO2 emissions generated by
flying.

• In 2019, the Company made charitable
donations amounting to HK$2.5 million.
• Since 2004 the campaign has raised over
HK$10 million for conservation projects in
remote areas of China.
