With a total land area of 115,707 square
miles, the Philippines is almost as large as
Italy, larger than New Zealand, twice as big
as Greece, and very much larger than
Britain. It’s irregular coastline stretches
10,850 statute miles which is twice as long
as the coastline of the United States.
Ancestors of Filipinos are of
Malay origin. We are colonized
by Spain for 333 years (1565-
1898). On December 28, 1898,
we were bought by US for S20M
as provided for in the 1898
Treaty of Paris. This made us
the first and only colony of US
which ruled us for 48 years
(1898-1946).
Philippines is the third largest English speaking
country in the world. Filipinos are known for
their talent in languages. It is the only nation in
Asia who speak English and Spanish and a
literature written in these two foreign languages.

The Philippines has more than 111dialects spoken, owing to the

subdivisions of these basic regional and cultural groups.
Filipino is the official national language, with English
considered as the country's unofficial one. Philippines is the
third largest English speaking country in the world. Filipinos are
known for their talent in languages. It is the only nation in Asia
who speak English and Spanish and a literature written in these
two foreign languages.
From a long history of Western
colonial rule, interspersed with the
visits of merchants and traders ,
evolved a people of unique blend of
east and west, both in appearance
and in culture. The Filipino character
is actually a little bit of all the cultures
put together.
The Filipino is known
for its very close
family ties.

The father is the head of the family but while he rules, the mother governs.
The mother reigns in the home: she is the educator, the financial officer, the
accountant, the censor, the laundrywoman, and the cook. But over and
above are the grandparents.
The bayanihan or spirit of kinship and
camaraderie that Filipinos are famous for are
said to have been taken form the Malay
forefathers. The close family relations are said
to have been inherited from the Chinese. The
piousness comes from the Spaniards.

Hospitality is a common denominator in the Filipino character and it is wht

distinguishes the Filipino. The Filipino opens his heart to you, a complete
stranger, and offers you the best in his kitchen and bed chamber usually
with profusion of apologies, to make yourself “feel at home” while he, the
host, sleeps on the cold floor.
FOOD
Food is very significant for a Filipino. They are among the food lovers. Filipinos do not call it a meal if rice is
not served. They eat for at least 6 times a day.
Those who work or live around people from other
cultures understand the importance of learning about
the differences surrounding them. What is often
neglected, however, is the equal importance of
knowing one's own culture, values and beliefs in
order to relate more effectively across cultural lines.
Awareness of our own culture is important, because it can
keep us from projecting our values onto others. By
projecting, I mean the universal tendency to think other
people are doing something for the same reasons we
would. This can happen when we are unaware of the values
that drive us and unable to distinguish them from those
held by other cultures.
So, cultural self-awareness is so
important in making cross-cultural
relationships work. Yes, knowledge of
other cultures is important, but looking at
ourselves can teach us as much about
cross-cultural understanding as all the
anthropology books in the world.
