ABSTRACT

 The paper presents the results on the existing petrol engines that can be
suitably modified to operate on the dual fuel mode to conserve petrol and also
reduce environmental pollution.

 The conventional fuels, petrol and petrol for internal combustion engines are
getting exhausted at an alarming rate, due to increase in the vehicular
population.

 Further these fuels cause serious environmental problems as they release

toxic gases into the atmosphere at high temperatures and concentrations.
Some of the pollutants released by the engines are UBHC, CO, NOx, smoke
and particulate matter.
 In view of this and many other related issues, these fuels will have to be
replaced by alternative and eco-friendly fuels.
 A 4-stroke, single-cylinder petrol engine has been considered for the
purpose of experimentation. It is modified suitably to run on the dual fuel
mode.
 LPG carburetor is incorporated on the intake side of the engine. At lower
loads, for improved performance, the engine could be operated on pure
petrol operation.
 However for higher loads, the operation could be switched over to the dual
fuel mode.
INTRODUCTION

 Dual-fuel engines (Bi-fuel engines) are multi-fuel engines

which have capable of running by taking two fuels. On internal
combustion engines one fuel is gasoline or petrol, and the other
is an alternate fuel such as natural gas (CNG), LPG, or
hydrogen. T
 Two fuels are stored in separate tanks and the engine runs on
one fuel at a time in some cases, in others both fuels are used in
unison.
 Bi-fuel vehicles have the capability to switch back and forth
from gasoline or petrol to the other fuel, manually or
automatically.

OBJECTIVES

 An attempt has been made to replace the Gasoline in multi

cylinder petrol engine with some percentage of Eucalyptus oil.
 To study the performance parameters like brake thermal
efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption at various
loads.
 To study the emission parameters mainly exhaust parameters
like hydrocarbon emission, oxides of carbon (CO & CO2) and
oxides of nitrogen (NOx).
LITERATURE SURVEY

POOLA R.B. et al. carried out an experiment in the year 1993 with 20% by volume
of orange oil and eucalyptus oil were separately blended with gasoline brake thermal
efficiency, exhaust emissions and combustion parameters were obtained. The experiment
was conducted on small capacity (145.45 cc displacement volume, 4.3 KW at 5200 r.p.m),
loop scavenged, air cooled, single cylinder, two stroke -ignition engines with a
compression ratio of 7.4. It was found out that the performance fuel blends was better than
gasoline fuel. Experiment was performed on two compression ratios viz. 7.4 &9 and
improvement of 20.5% in brake thermal efficiency was obtained at 2 KW, 3000 r.p.m, over
the normal gasoline engine. Along with this hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emission
were reduced. While comparing the two fuel blends eucalyptus oil blend provides the best
results for brake thermal efficiency with low exhaust emissions.
WORKING

 A two-stroke engine is a combustion engine that completes the

thermodynamic cycle in two movements of the piston
compared to twice that number for a four-stroke engine.

 This increased efficiency is accomplished by using the

beginning of the compression stroke and the end of the
combustion stroke to perform simultaneously the intake and
exhaust (or scavenging) functions.

 In this way four-stroke engines often provide strikingly high

specific power. Petrol (spark ignition) versions are particularly
useful in lightweight (portable) applications used in
