John 6: 25-35,51-58

Jesus said: "I am the living bread that came

down from heaven; if any one eats of this
bread, he will live for ever; . . . he who eats
my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life
and . . . abides in me, and I in him" (Jn 6:51,
54, 56).
The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the
Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church
and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his
Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of
salvation on his Body which is the Church.
Anyone who desires to receive Christ in
Eucharistic communion must be in the state
of grace. Anyone aware of having sinned
mortally must not receive communion
without having received absolution in the
sacrament of penance.
What bread did Jesus tell the Jews to look for? How could they obtain
this bread?

This bread was Jesus himself. Since food can give life only when one
approaches and partakes of it, one has to come to Jesus, listen to
Him in order to obtain the eternal life he has to offer. That is what is
called faith.
Jesus is the Son of God who became
human in order to tell us personally of
the greatness of the Father’s love and His
offer of life and salvation.
If we have to eat the flesh and blood of
Jesus in order to obtain eternal life,
what had to happen so that Jesus may
give us life?

He had to die.
In the Eucharist, how do we receive Jesus as the Bread of Life and
Living Bread?
 As the Bread of Life, Jesus proclaims his Word in the first part of
the Mass
 As the Living Bread, he gives himself in consecrated bread and
wine in the second part of the Mass
