 Homo Habilis is one of the early ancestors of
modern man who used primitive stone tools.
Their remains have been found in the Olduvai
Gorge in Tanzania. They are believed to be about
2.4 to 1.4 million years ago during the early
Pleistocene epoch.

 The word habilis is based on a Latin word

meaning 'handy' or 'skilful’.

 The species name, which means "handy man,"

was given to Homo habilis because of its
association with stone tools found in the same
archaeological deposits.

earlier ancestors
 The foramen magnum is repositioned
farther underneath the skull

• Jaws smaller than those found in the earlier Australopithecus
• Teeth arranged in a more rounded arc like in modern human.

LIMS AND LEGS

modern humans

WAY OF LIFE OF
HOMO HABILIS
Daily Life Homo Habilis men were
hunters and the women were gatherers. In
the morning, the Homo Habilis women
would go down to the river to get water
that they would carry in large gourds.
Along the way, they gathered pods and
fruit. Some men would go hunt for food
while other men would stay back at the
huts and help the women and children.
They would also make more tools and keep
everyone safe when unwanted guests
visited/invaded.
