Introduction

Curriculum Development

• Is the process of designing a course of study


according to a set of requirements.

• It's a form of communicated information for; how an


action, behavior, method, or task is to be begun,
completed, conducted, or executed.

•Education can be
described as the formal
process by which a
profession or society
transmits its knowledge,
skills, customs, and values
that’s accumulated from
one generation to another
(Adeniji 2017).

Broadly speaking each academic discipline (say


history, politics, economics and even sciences)
have their own philosophy or general guiding
principles and theoretical frame works (Shri 2015).

Nursing Education on the other hand is the composition
of theoretical and practical training provided to Nurses
with the purpose of preparing them to be a competent,
vibrant and quality professionals.

It consists of a body of knowledge, skills, attitudes,


values, and habits that is delivered to learners in various
settings. These settings include classrooms, clinical
training in demonstration/simulation laboratories as well
as in real client/patient care environment where the Nurse
client relationship occur (Kabir et-al. 2019).

► The roots of Nursing in the middle east, however, canbe
traced even further back, to the islamic period (570-632
AD) and to Rufaida Al-Asalmiya, the first Muslim Nurse
( Miller et al 2000.,)

► Nurses have existed in many cultures since ancient times


(Sapountzi-Krepia, 2004).

► Regulated professionals have designated standards for


their members and reinforced these standards by
withholding registration from individuals lacking
appropriated educational or other credentials. (ICN/WHO,
2005)

►Historical evolution of Nursing education in Nigeria.


Professional nursing development in Nigeria followed a
similar track like the other parts of the world. Nothing was
known about nursing in Nigeria during the pre-colonial era

►The evolution of Nursing finds its way to Nigeria through


migration of nurses in evangelization and exploration during
Colonial era through instructions from expatriate

►The early missionaries who arrived in Nigeria in the early


nineteenth century, Professional Nursing and education in
Nigeria evolved from experimentation in the care of the sick
and wounded to augment the medical efforts in their various
mission post.

►These mission posts formed the nucleus of the several training


schools for professional nurses and midwives in Nigeria that
metamorphosed from the apprenticeship to the Florence
Nightingale's nursing education model during the colonial era.

► The schools were hospital based and offer a diploma


certificate in Nursing. From the beginning of the post-colonial
era to date, the diploma nursing program has continued to
thrive, which marks the beginning the era of the university-
based nursing education (degree) programs in Nigeria.
DEVELOPMENT PATTERN OF NURSING EDUCATION

► Nursing came to Nigeria through the British Colonial masters.

►The first nursing home in Nigeria in Jericho, Ibadan by the


government of the British Colonial masters.

►Later on missionaries and their wives came to supplement


government effort by setting up Mission homes, Dispensaries e.t.c.
and commence the training of Nurses in Nigeria.

►There was no formal training but on the Job acquisition skills and
practical aspect are been rendered by nursing surgery.

►The regional government in Nigeria began the training of nurses by


settings individual regional standard.

► In 1949, the School of Nursing, Eleyele was established to facilitate


the training of nurses, later in 1952, the University College Hospital
Ibadan started the training of nurses in a higher standard.

► In 1949, the Nursing Council of Nigeria was established to


complement the efforts of the various training bodies and creating
standards for Nurses.

► By 1965, a department of Nursing was established in the University


of Ibadan to commence a degree programme in Nigeria.

► Later on, University of Ife and University of Nigeria, Enugu also


started degree in 1973.

► At present, all the states in Nigeria has one or more School


of Nursing, Midwifery and kinds of Post Basic schools.

► More degree awarding institutions has been granted the


license to produce degree holder in Nursing.

► Among them are Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria;


University of Calabar, Calabar; Ladoke Akintola University
(LAUTECH), Ogbomosho. Also private University, Babcock
University, Ilisan Remo;; Madonna University, Bowen
University among others started degree in Nursing (Matthew
2018).

SUMMARY

Philosophy determines the aims of education and


curriculum determines how those aims are attained.
Also curriculum is to be determined by educational
objectives which are again determined by philosophy.

CONCLUSION

Curriculum development gives direction to Nursing


education by certain guidelines. Philosophy of
Nursing education, the school, teachers, nurses,
clients, hospitals, and other officials can coordinate
their efforts towards achieving aims and objectives,
that will produce qualitative Nursing education and
care.
