WHEN DID THE HAITI
EARTHQUAKE OCCURR.

• Haiti is a Caribbean country that

shares the island of Hispaniola
with the Dominican Republic to
its east. On January 12, 2010, at
4:53 p.m., a magnitude 7.0
earthquake struck Haiti. It was
the strongest quake to hit the
region in over 200 years and its
epicenter was just 10 miles
outside Haiti’s capital city, Port-
au-Prince.

WHAT CAUSED THE
HAITI EARTHQUAKE

• There are many theories about how

the earthquake happened and why
was it so strong. Haiti is situated at the
northern end of the Caribbean Plate,
on a transform (slip/conservative)
plate boundary with the North
American Plate. The North American
plate is moving west. This movement
is not smooth, and there is friction
between the North American Plate
and the Caribbean Plate. Pressure
builds between the two plates until
released as an earthquake.
THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE KILLED
AND AFFECTED BY THE HAITI
EARTHQUAKE 2010.

• The impact of the earthquake was staggering:

According to various sources, ''220,000-
300,000" lost their lives, about 300,000 were
injured and millions were suddenly homeless.
The island nation’s infrastructure was
decimated.
HOW MUCH DID IT COST THE COUNTRY
TO REPAIR THE DAMAGES CAUSED BY
THE HAITI EARTHQUAKE?

• Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas

sustained significant damage due to Haiti’s
poor infrastructure and lack of building
codes. Multi-storey concrete buildings
collapsed as well as thousands of homes,
displacing up to 1.5 million people. Almost
4,000 schools were damaged or destroyed by
the earthquake. The Inter-American
Development Bank estimated that the
disaster incurred between $7.8 billion and
$8.5 billion in damage. This figure could be as
much as $13.9 billion over time.
HUMANITARIAN AID AFTER
THE EARTHQUAKE

• In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake,

national and international aid agencies and
non-governmental organizations established
field hospitals and clinics to provide
emergency treatment and surgery for injured
survivors, and also delivered water, food,
shelter, and protection to the IDPs. This
international response worked in coordination
with the Haitian government to provide
supplies and equipment as well as to train and
supervise local workers to help rebuild Haiti's
infrastructure
