• Jobs of the fruits,
• Importance of spreading the seeds.
• Seed dispersal methods.
Lets start ------
In the given paper, work as a group and note down all
information you know about fruits and seeds.

Page 8
Why seed must spread?
• Plants need to spread their seeds
to make new baby plant.

• We call this

SEED DISPERSAL
Happens when fruit is ripe

Page 9
The baby/young plant
is called seedlings

What do seedlings require

to grow into a healthy
plant?

Dispersal BY ANIMALS
• Soft, juicy, tasty fruit attract animals

• Have small seeds

• animals – birds, monkeys, mice even elephants

eat the fruits.

• seeds pass through their body and dispersed

through droppings

some seeds have

spikes and hooks –
stick to the fur of
animals

The seeds are spiky, or have hooks to get caught in an

animals fur

We can either plant them in garden or carry on our
clothes or shoes.

• Fruits are produced by flowering or non-flowering plants?

• Seeds are formed where?
• What are the two processes before the fruits are formed?
• Can a human help in seed dispersing?

Some fruits float
Dispersed/spread BY WATER
• Fruit is spongy and float in water – carrying
the seeds to a different place

seed is called
sea pencils
• Mangrove – grow in salty water in warm places ----
seeds float until it reaches land
Page 25
The seeds float until they reach land

Page 26
Fruits open or explode
BY EXPLOSION
• Fruit disperse by themselves

• the fruit dries out and open --- seeds fall out

• Some fruits explode and shoot out their seeds

Some fruits drop or roll
BY GRAVITY
• Fruits when ripe are heavy and fall
down or dropped from tree

FRUITS

tough/ hard outer skin soft skinned fruit break open when
roll from the parent plant to they reach ground -- animals eat

Questions LB – Page.19

The spongy seed coat has air spaces to trap water helping
the seed float.

Page 30
In hoy and dry climate the seed dry out and they will explode so
they are pocked before they spread by explosion

Page 31
Animals can eat the fruit and disperse the
seeds in their droppings.

Page 32
The seeds are light and papery thin wings help
them to be blown away

Building an explosive seed pod
Experiment to find out which of the given samples of seeds
disperse to far areas
• Form group of 5 or 6
• Teacher aids to build two pods with the given materials.
• Collect the seed sample A and fill in the balloon through a funnel provided.
• Blow the balloon to create enough tension.
• Place a mat in the ground.
• On a fixed spot pop the balloon.
• Note down the required observation.
• Repeat the same for sample B.
