Question
1. Define Medieval, Renaissance &
Baroque
2. What kind of music do they have?
3. Who are the famous composers in
these periods?
4. Enumerate their famous compositions.
MEDIEVAL – Middle Ages. This is the
first & longest era of western Art Music,
from approximately 5th-15th century.

RENAISSANCE – came from the French


word “renaitre” which means rebirth,
revival and rediscover.

BAROQUE – came from the Italian word


“barocco” which means “ A pearl of
Irregular Shape”

KIND OF MUSIC IN MEDIEVAL PERIOD
• Both sacred and secular
• Monophonic Music means one sound or single
line melodies
• Plainsong or plainchant is a monophonic
consisting of one or unaccompanied single
melody
• Gregorian Chant – a monophonic or unison,
liturgical music in Roman catholic church
• Lute – one of the early music
• Later Middle Ages it gradually yielded to
polyphony

• Both sacred and secular
• Madrigal – a form of secular vocal
polyphonic music composition w/c
originated from Italy. It was written
& expressed in poetic text & sung
during courtly social gatherings. It
is the most important secular form
during the Renaissance period.
• Mass – is a form of sacred
musical composition that sets
texts of the Eucharistic Liturgy
into music.
• Motet – is a polyphonic choral
works in Latin texts. It can be
used in any service of the
churches usually in acapella.

nature.

• Baroque became popular &
successful because the roman
Catholic Church encourage its
development. The Catholic Church
decided at the time of the council
of Trent that the arts communicate
religious themes through man’s
direct & emotional involvement.
Music Genres
Opera – a dramatic work of classical time.
Oratorio – a religious narrative large scale
work for orchestra & voices performed w/o
costume, scenery or action.
Suite – a set of instrumental compositions for
dance style
Concerto Grosso – instrumental from small
group of soloist & full orchestra
Fugue – contrapuntal composition in w/c a
short melody is introduced by 1 part &
successfully taken up by others & developed
by interweaving the part

COMPOSER
Adam de la Halle – was a french-
born trouvere, musician, & poet a.k.a
“Adam the Hunch back”. He was one
of the oldest secular composers.
His works:
1.Le Jeu de Robin et de Marion
2.La Chanson du roi de Sicile
RENAISSANCE KNOWN
COMPOSERS
1. GIOVANNI PIERLUIGI DA
PALESTRINA – an Italian
Renaissance composer of sacred
music & the best known 16th-century
representative of the Roman school
of musical compositions.
His work: Pope Marcellus’ Mass
THOMAS MORLEY

He was the most famous composer of


secular music in his time. He became the
master of chorister in 1583. He was also
an organist at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
His Works:
1.Fire, Fire My Heart

3.It was a Lover & His Lass
4.Sing & Chant It
BAROQUE famous
composers
JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH – came from a
family of musicians. His personal & deep faith
is shown in his sacred music. He was known
for his compositions for Organ, Orchestra, &
Oratorio.
His Works:
1.Concerto Grosso
2.Cantatas
3.Fugue
ANTONIO VIVALDI – nicknamed “The
Red Priest” an Italian Baroque composer
& a virtuoso violinist. Recognized as one
of the Greatest Baroque composer.
His work: The Four Seasons

GEORGE Friedrich Handel – a son of a


Pastor,& remembered for his operas &
oratorios.
His work: The Messiah
