Causes of Short Circuits
● An example of electrical accident that often
occurs and can be fatal
● Occurs when the earth wire touches the live wire
● During a short circuit , overcurrent in the circuit
produces high amount of heat.
● The fuse wire melts and breaks the circuit
Causes of Short Circuits

● In instances where there is no fuse in the circuit ,

● Electrical appliances could be damaged and a
fire may break out
Figure 1.1 Causes of short circuit
Causes of Electrical Accidents
● The use of electric appliances without earth
wires or with damaged earth wires
● Using wet hands to switch electrical appliances
on or off
● The use of worn out cables and exposed live
wires
Causes of Electrical Accidents
● Hammering a nail above or below a switch or
socket
● Inserting electric conductors into sockets
● Too many appliances are connected to one
socket , result in cables overheating

one socket which result in cables overheating
Safety Measures when Using
Electrical Appliances
● Don’t touch switch or electrical appliances with wet
hands
● Don’t use wires with loose or without insulation
● Switch off the main switch before connecting new
electrical wiring or when repairing electrical appliances
● Don’t put out electrical fire with water
Safety Measures when Using
Electrical Appliances
● Never pull a plug out by its cord.
● Never put fingers or other objects in an outlet.
● Never touch big, metal transformer boxes with
warning signs

appliances with wet hands
Steps to Be Taken when An Electric
Shock Occurs
● Turn the main switch off
● Remove the electrical source from the victim
using an insulator such as a piece of wood
● Try to prevent the injured person from becoming
chilled
● Call an ambulance

Extra Knowledge
An electrician can test the presence of electrical
current in a socket using a test pen.
1. Question ( 2 marks )
Explain a step that can be taken to prevent
electric shock while the electrician is testing a
socket.
Extra Knowledge
Answer
● Hold the test pen at the insulated end of the test
pen
● Because that part is made out of a non-metal
which does not allow electricity to flow
