IS IT ETHICAL FOR US TO CAUSE THE

EXTINCTION OF SOME SPECIES FOR THE

SAKE OF OUR CONSUMPTION AND EGOISM?
DEFINATIONS

 EXTINCTION- the termination of a kind of organism or of a group of kinds usually

species.
or
-the dying out of species.

 CONSUMPTION- the action of using up a resource

 EGOISM- an ethical theory that treats self-interest as the foundation of morality.

DISCUSSION ON TOPIC

Introduction
 - Human activities have significantly contributed to the endangerment and extinction of
animal species.
 - This issue raises ethical concerns about whether it is justifiable to cause the extinction of
some species for the sake of our consumption and egoism.
 This issue raises argument in different fields.
ARGUMENTS

The economic argument

 Some argue that causing the extinction of a species is necessary for economic
development.
 However, this argument fails to consider the long-term consequences of losing a species,
including its potential for scientific and medical advancement.
CONTINUES…

The moral argument

 All living beings have inherent value and the right to exist.
 Causing the extinction of a species is a violation of this moral principle and shows a
disregard for our responsibility as caretakers of the environment.
CONTINUE….

The egocentric argument

 The desire for rare or exotic products, such as ivory or furs, often drives the demand for
these endangered species.
 This egocentric desire is not a valid justification for causing the extinction of an entire
species.
CONTINUE…

The ecological argument

 Every species plays a critical role in maintaining the delicate balance of the ecosystem.
 The extinction of one species can have a domino effect on the entire ecosystem, leading to
further extinctions and ecological collapse.
The consequences of extinction

 The extinction of a species is a permanent and irreversible loss.

 Along with the loss of biodiversity, we lose potential medical cures, scientific discoveries,
and ecological stability.
Conclusion

 Our actions as consumers and environmental stewards have a significant impact on the
natural world.
 It is our ethical responsibility to consider the long-term consequences of our choices and
ensure the preservation of all species for future generations.
