WHAT IS MEANT
BY GERUND?
Gerund is a verb that has a function as a
noun. The point is, the verb-ing that we are
familiar with, such as "riding", "eating",
"writing" and so on becomes something that
can function as the subject and object of a
sentence.

The form of the gerund is VERB1 + ING

6. Follows prepositional objects

The following 'to' prepositions are followed by a gerund:

– look forward to: waiting/ eager
– to take to: happy
– confess to: confess

Special note:
What is the difference between "used to" and "to be used to"?

The answer is:


used to + V1 : past habit.
to be used to + gerund : custom until now.

Example :
I used to play soccer. (now not anymore)
I am used to playing soccer. (until now still done)
7. Forming noun phrases

9. Verbs that can be followed by V-ing or to V1

a. There is no difference in meaning:

advise, begin, continue, dislike, dread, hate, intend, like, love, prefer, propose, start.

b. There are different meanings:

S+forget/remember/stop/regret+ Ving : the job has been done

S+forget/remember/stop/regret + to V1 : the job has not been done

Example :
• I forgot giving her a letter. (I forgot to give)
• I forgot to give her a letter. (I forgot not to give)
• I stop smoking. (I quit smoking habit)
• I stop smoking. (quitting from doing a job to smoke)
