Physical science deals with matter and energy. Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space, and is made up of atoms. A substance's state of matter is a physical property and does not change its chemical makeup - matter only changes form when it changes state. The document then describes the three states of matter - solid, liquid, and gas - based on how tightly or loosely packed the particles are and their ability to move freely.

Matter is anything the has a mass and occupies space (volume). Atoms are the basic building blocks of matter. MASS measures the amount of matter in an object, WEIGHT measures the force of gravity acting on an object. Volume measures the amount of space that a substance or an object takes up. The basic SI unit for volume is the cubic centimeter (cm3). A given kind of matter has the same chemical makeup and the same chemical properties regardless of its state. That’s because state of matter is a physical property. As a result, when matter changes state, it doesn’t become a different kind of substance. The particles in a solid are tightly packed together and in an orderly repetitive pattern thus having a strong attraction to each which makes it difficult for them to move freely. This gives solids a fixed shape and a fixed volume. The particles in a liquid are loosely packed together and have a weaker attraction to each other than the particles in a solid, allowing them to move more freely. The particles can slide past one another but not pull apart completely. The particles in a gas are widely spaced apart and have a very weak attraction to each other, allowing them to move freely and randomly. The particles can pull apart and spread out. 1.
