HISTORY

The Inconel family of alloys was first developed before December 1932, when
its trademark was registered by the International Nickel Company of
Delaware and New York. A significant early use was found in support of the
development of the Whittle jet engine, during the 1940s by research teams
at Henry Wiggin & Co of Hereford, England a subsidiary of the Mond Nickel
Company, which merged with Inco in 1928. The Hereford Works and its
properties including the Inconel trademark were acquired in 1998 by Special
Metals Corporation.

 Inconel Filler Metal 52 M (ERNiCrFe-7A) is used for the gas-tungsten-arc and gas-metal-arc
welding of Inconel alloy 690 and for the overlaying of stainless steel and carbon steel to provide
a corrosion-resistant surface of the nickel-chromium alloy. The high chromium level offers
outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking in the nuclear, pure water environment.
 Inconel, with a nominal composition of 76Ni-16Cr-8Fe, combines the inherent corrosion
resistance, strength, and toughness of nickel with the extra resistance to high-temperature
oxidation of chromium.
Corrosion Property
Inconels are a class of nickel-chrome-based super
alloys characterized by high corrosion resistance,
oxidation resistance, strength at high temperatures,
and creep resistance. Inconel is able to withstand
elevated temperatures and extremely corrosive
environments due to two factors. The corrosion rate is
0.03 mm/year at 700 °C and 0.50 mm/year at 900 °C
for 10 h.The properties of INCONEL alloy 625 that
make it an excellent choice for sea-water applications
are freedom from local attack (pitting and crevice cor-
rosion), high corrosion-fatigue strength, and
resistance to chloride-ion stress-corrosion cracking.
WELDABILITY
 Welding of some Inconel alloys (especially the gamma prime precipitation
hardened family; e.g., Waspaloy and X-750) can be difficult due to cracking and
microstructural segregation of alloying elements in the heat-affected zone.
 However, several alloys such as 625 and 718 have been designed to overcome
these problems.
 The most common welding methods are gas tungsten arc welding and electron-
beam welding.
 Inconel alloys can be welded using a variety of techniques, including gas tungsten
arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and plasma arc welding
(PAW).
 However, due to their high melting point and low thermal conductivity, special
care must be taken during the welding process to prevent cracking and distortion.

Applications

 SpaceX uses inconel (Inconel 718) in the engine manifold of their Merlin engine
which powers the Falcon 9 launch vehicle.
 Tesla is now claiming to use Inconel in place of steel in the main battery pack
contactor of its Model S so that it remains springy under the heat of heavy
current. Tesla claims that this allows these upgraded vehicles to safely increase
the maximum pack output from 1300 to 1500 amperes, allowing for an increase
in power output (acceleration) Tesla refers to as "Ludicrous Mode".
 Ford Motor Company is using Inconel to make the turbine wheel in the
turbocharger of its EcoBlue diesel engines introduced in 2016.
 BMW has since used Inconel in the exhaust manifold of its high performance
luxury car, the BMW M5 E34 with the S38 engine, withstanding higher
temperatures and reducing backpressure.
 Basic application : Aerospace, gas turbines, rocket motors, spacecraft, space
shuttles, nuclear reactors, pumps, turbo pump seals, and tooling.
Conclusion
Inconel alloys are a versatile family
of superalloys with unique
properties that make them ideal
for use in high-temperature and
corrosive environments.
Their chemical composition,
corrosion properties, and
weldability make them a popular
choice for a wide range of
applications across multiple
industries.
