Education system in Ukraine

 The development of educational institutions is


an important condition for the implementation
of the whole and tasks of society in the field of
education. With the development of production
and socio-economic relations in the society there
is a continuous increase in the number and
specialization of educational institutions, the
growth of their degree.
 The education system is a set of educational
institutions that operate in the country, the
relationship between them and the General
principles that determine the construction and
functioning of these institutions.
 Ukraine has got rather developed system of
education. General secondary education is free
and compulsory. There are many gymnasiums,
lyceums and private schools in Ukraine. The
secondary school must secure a uniform level of
knowledge necessary for each student. Post-
secondary education is provided by technical
schools, colleges and institution of higher
learning: universities, academies and institutes.
At each institute or university there is a post-
graduate course with postgraduates working for
their scientific degrees.
 In Ukraine all citizens are guaranteed an equal
opportunity to get free education. Nearly 22. 300
general-education schools, mainly state-run,
operate in Ukraine. Approximately 7 000 000
pupils attend these schools. More than half of
these pupils (57%) are educated in the Ukrainian
language; the rest of the schools teach Ukrainian
as a separate subject. There are schools where the
language of instruction is Russian, Moldovian,
Hungarian, Romanian, Polish, Tartar, etc.
 Ukraine has 232 institutions of higher learning
of the 3rd—4th levels of accreditation (888 500
students) and 778 institutions of higher
learning of the 1st—2nd level of accreditation
(645 000 students).

New types of educational institutions,


including private schools and colleges, are
being established.
 There are many scientific, educational and
academic centres in Ukraine. Kyiv with its
famous National University named after T.
Shevchenko, Polytechnic University, Kyivo-
Mohylyanska Academy which resumed its
work in 1991. There are three faculties in the
Academy now: the humanities, social and
national sciences. Lviv is the leading scientific
and cultural centre of Western Ukraine. It has a
number of research institutes of high level.
