Animal cell culture

Cell culture
• Cell culture is the process by which prokaryotic,
eukaryotic cells are grown under controlled
conditions.
• In 1885 for the first time maintained embryonic chick
cells in a cell culture.
• Cell culture was first successfully undertaken by Ross
Harrison in 1907.
• successfully grew animal tissue (frog neuroblasts) outside
the body
What is Animal cell culture..?
• Cell culture refers to the process by which animal cells are grown
in a controlled artificial environment.
• In a cell culture technique, cells are removed from an animal and
grown subsequently in a favorable environment under sterile
conditions.
History

1885- Maintained embryonic chick cells in a saline culture by Roux


1897-Survival of cells isolated from blood and connective tissue in serum and plasma
by Loeb
1907- Cultivated frog nerve cells in a lymph clot and
observed the growth of nerve fibers in vitro for several weeks

1911- First liquid media consisted of sea water, serum, embryo
extract, salts and peptones

1923- T-flask as the first specifically designed cell culture vessel

1981 : Mouse Embryonic Stem Cell
1985: Human growth hormone produced from recombinant bacteria
1996 : The First mammal cloned from adult cells (Dolly, the sheep)
