LESSON 4

ROLES OF ICT IN THE

TEACHING AND LEARNING
Lesson Outcomes:
1. Identify roles of technology in the teaching
and learning
2. Appreciate the value of technology in
supporting student learning.
According to Stosic (2015):
There are three educational technology
domains:

1. TECHNOLOGY AS A TUTOR
2. TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING TOOL
3. TECHNOLOGY AS A LEARNING TOOL
TECHNOLOGY AS A TUTOR
Together with the teacher, technology can
support the teacher to teach another person
or technology when programmed by the
teacher can be a tutor on its own.

What will the teacher do to make technology

tutor another person or another learner?
TECHNOLOGY AS A TUTOR
The teacher will simply switch on TV or
Radio Programs, play DVDs or CDs that
contain educational programs.

The teacher can search on youtube or

internet educational videos that are related
to the lesson being discussed.
According to Stosic (2015):
There are three educational technology
domains:

1. TECHNOLOGY AS A TUTOR
2. TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING TOOL
3. TECHNOLOGY AS A LEARNING TOOL
TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING TOOL
Like a tutor, technology is a teaching tool, but
can never replace a teacher. This is like
handyman, which is just there to be reached.

What will be the benefit of technology as a

teaching tool to the teachers?
TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING TOOL
As it is used to facilitate learning, it lighten
the work of a teacher. But it must be
developed by the teacher itself.

A teacher don’t need to print and develop

variety of pictures anymore in order to
present it. The use of PowerPoint
presentation can make series of pictures
appear in just a click of it.
According to Stosic (2015):
There are three educational technology
domains:

1. TECHNOLOGY AS A TUTOR
2. TECHNOLOGY AS A TEACHING TOOL
3. TECHNOLOGY AS A LEARNING TOOL
TECHNOLOGY AS A LEARNING TOOL
While teacher utilizes technology as the tool
for teaching, likewise it is an effective tool for
learning.

What will be the benefit of technology as a

learning tool to the learners?
TECHNOLOGY AS A LEARNING TOOL
It makes learning easy and effective.
It increases the interest of learners and
sustains their focus because of the audio
visual presentations and ICT interactions
made by the teacher.
ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY
FOR TEACHER AND
TEACHING
1. Technology provides enormous support to
the teacher as the facilitator of learning

It transform a passive classroom to an active and

interactive one.
It increases attention and the level of learning.
2. Technology has modernized the teaching-
learning environment.

The teachers are assisted and supplemented with

appropriate instructional materials for daily
activities.
3. Technology improves teaching-learning
process and ways of teaching

This will make the act of teaching more efficient

and effective.
According to the multiple intelligences by Howard
Gardner, there is a genius in every child. So as a
teacher, we must be varied at all times and
consider the learning styles of every student in
the integration of technology
4. Technology opens new fields in educational
researchers.

Current educational researchers will no longer

find difficulty in interpreting tests, assessment
and evaluation results.
There are available programs that can analyze
and interpret results with speed and accuracy.
5. Technology adds to competence of teachers
and inculcates scientific outlook.

Through the utilization of theories of learning and

intelligence which are explained in references
uploaded in the net, the teachers are encouraged
to imbibe skills to source these information with
speed and accuracy.
6. Technology adds to competence of teachers
and inculcates scientific outlook.

With the demand of continuing professional

development (CPD) for teachers, the availability of
technology provides alternative way of attending
professional development online.
 Teachers are allowed to gain 15 CPD units every
three year in order to renew teaching license.
ROLES OF TECHNOLOGY
FOR LEARNER AND
LEARNING
1. Support learners to learn how to learn on
their own.

All teachers fully understand that subject matter

or content is a means to achieve the learning
outcomes.
There are three categories of knowledge
according to Egbert (2009).
• Declarative Knowledge
• Structural Knowledge
• Procedural Knowldge
3 Categories of Knowledge Egbert (2009)

1. Declarative Knowledge
consists of discrete pieces of information that
answers the questions WHAT, WHO, WHEN, and
WHERE.
It is learned through memorization of facts and
drills and practices, and with mnemonics.

3 Categories of Knowledge Egbert (2009)

2. Structural Knowledge
consists of facts or pieces of declarative
knowledge put together to attain some form of
meaning.

In your own, what is your concept about a pencil?

3 Categories of Knowledge Egbert (2009)

3. Procedural Knowledge
is knowledge in action or knowledge of how to do
something that is based on facts but learned through
a procedure or process.

How to start a car?

How to log in on facebook?
How to communicate with your teachers?
2. Technology enhances learner’s communication
skills through social interaction

This is commonly described as transmittal of

information from one person to another as single
or individual groups or individuals

According to Shirty (2003) in Egbert (2009), there

are three communication patterns:
3 Categories of Communication Patterns

a. Point to Point or Two-way or one-to-one like

internet chat, phone conversation or even face-
face conversation.
b. One-to-many outbound like a lecture, or
television. There is no social interaction.
c. Many-to-many like group discussion, buzz
session, heads together. This kind of interaction
provides opportunities for social interaction.
3. Technology upgrades learners’ higher order thinking
skills; critical thinking, problem solving and creativity

21st century learning requires the development of

higher-order-thinking skills.
Technology have a great role to play in the
development and enhancement of these skills.
CRITICAL THINKING
(the highest level of thinking)

A part of the cluster of higher order thinking

skills.
It refers to the ability to interpret, explain,
analyze, evaluate, infer and self-regulate in order
to make good decisions.

As A teacher, how should we practice and display

critical thinking?
a. Ask right questions

Apply critical thinking questions to let them use

their declarative knowledge.
Clarity: here are examples of… can you give other
examples?
Accuracy: what pieces of evidence support your
claim?
Precision: Exactly how much. . .
Breadth: what do you think will other say about the
issue?
b. Use Critical thinking tasks with appropriate
level of challenges.

Teachers should be mindful about the readiness of

the students.
Bright students may find it easy and be bored fast.
Slow learners may find it difficult.
So we need to provide appropriate activities for
learners.

What are some ways that teachers should do?

1.Vary the questions asked
2.Introduce new technologies
3.Modify the learners’ grouping
4.Modify the critical thinking task
5.Encourage curiosity
c. CREATIVITY

Characterized as involving the ability to think

fluently, originally and elaborately.
Flexibly – able to use many points of view
Fluently – able to generate many ideas
Originally – able to generate new ideas
Elaborately – to add new details

There are seven Creative Strategies by (Osborn,

1963)
SEVEN CREATIVE CATEGORIES (SCAMPER)

Substitute: find something else to replace to do what

it does.
Combine: Blend two things that do not usually go
together.
Adapt: Look for other ways this can be used.
Modify/Magnify/Minify: Change, enlarge, decrease.
Put into Other use: Find another uses
Eliminate: Reduce, Remove
Reverse: turn upside-down, inside out, front-side back
As a Teacher
You should be able to know that all of your students:
have different learning styles;
some are slow, some are bright;
some are talented and skillful ;
some have physical disabilities; and
some have their own problems in learning.

YOU NEED TO ALLOW THEM TO SHOW WHAT THEY CAN DO

DON’T GIVE UP ON THEM, INSPIRE AND GUIDE THEM
