SOLID WASTE

MANAGEMENT
SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT
The term solid waste management mainly
refers to the complete process of collecting,
treating and disposing of solid wastes.
According to UNEP.org

Every year, an estimated 11.2 billion

tons of solid waste are collected
worldwide.
WHAT IS SOLID WASTE?
• Solid waste is mainly considered as trash or
garbage in solid form that includes waste from
our houses, schools, offices, industries,
factories and etc.
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE:

These are the wastes that come from our

kitchen and it includes food remains,
garden waste, etc. Biodegradable waste is
also known as moist waste.
NON-
BIODEGRADABLE
These WASTE:
are the wastes which include old
newspapers, broken glass pieces, plastics, etc. Non-
biodegradable waste is known as dry waste. Dry
wastes can be recycled and can be reused. Non-
biodegradable wastes do not decompose by
themselves and hence are major pollutants.
EFFECTS OF SOLID
WASTE
Mismanagement of waste causes air pollution, water
and soil contamination and can cause infection and
transmit diseases. Moreover, when this waste is not
recycled, it usually ends up in landfills or oceans
posing threat to human health and marine life. Waste
can be recycled if collected and managed efficiently.
EFFICIENT WASTE
MANAGEMENT
WASTE REDUCTION
It can be done if people minimize the waste they produce on daily basis.
Knowing which product to use and how to dispose of it is extremely
important.

REUTILIZATION OF WASTE
Some products can be used several times after being bought. Items
can be used for the same purpose again or can be reused for different
means.
WASTE RECYCLING
Recycling facilities can process the waste and
make it useful for further use. Biodegradable
waste such as food, paper, or wood can be
decomposed organically to make fertilizers for
plants.

DECOMPOSITION OF WASTE
Another method of treating municipal solid waste
is composting. Composting offers a method of
processing and recycling both garbage and sewage
sludge in one operation.
IMPORTANCE OF
SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT
• Waste materials such as plastic, glass and paper
can be segregated in order to process them to
make new products which will save the natural
resources.
• Businesses can save money by recycling the
materials they produce. This would help
decrease their waste disposal costs.
• It helps environmental sustainability by
minimizing emissions of greenhouse gases and
preserving natural resources
CONCLUSION
In the current situation, it is necessary to realize
that how important waste management is for our
sustainable future and become aware of the power
you have to help make the world a cleaner place to
live in. You can easily help in taking part in proper
recycling and regulating your trash, reducing your
waste production and so on.
