TYPES OF MATERIALS

Types of natural resources such as sand, clay, plants, rocks, wood and
others.

SELECTION OF MATERIALS
• Types of natural resources such as clay, sand, water and other
materials provide sensory experiences/senses exploration for
children.

• They have the opportunity to learn about mathematical concepts such

as volume and measurement.

• Materials should be open-ended and can be used in many ways.

• The materials must be safe and have an emotional impact when the
children play and use them.
4
APPROPRIATENESS OF MATERIALS

• Water and sand play can be done inside or outside the class.

• Existing materials such as tires, wood box can help children actively
playing the game, especially for outdoor activities.

• Existing equipment such as cribs, slides, seesaw provide opportunities

for children to build large muscles in arms and legs.

5
MANIPULATIVE AND CONSTRUCTIVE MATERIALS

• Manipulative materials such as puzzles, beads or grains help children

practice their hand-eye coordination and build small muscles in fingers.

• The constructive materials such blocks build strength and fine motor
coordination, increase their imagination and provide opportunities for
children to work in group (cooperation).

6
TYPES OF MATERIALS

• Manipulative: puzzle, beads, buttons, grains

7
TYPES OF MATERIALS

• Constructive: Blocks, dough

8
SELECTION OF MATERIALS

• Materials should be safe to use and give cognitive learning

experiences such as math concepts and problem solving.

• For example, materials that have concepts of size, color and shape.

9
ACTIVITY

• State four (4) materials from nature sources and discuss activities
that you can have using them.
