Mizoram : introduction

Mizoram is one of the seven states in


the northeast. Mizoram shares its
borders with other northeast states
like Manipur, Tripura, and Assam as
well as with neighboring countries of
Bangladesh and Myanmar.

Mizoram (“Land of the Mizos”) was known as


the Lushai Hills District of Assam before it was
renamed the Mizo Hills District in 1954. In
1972 it became a centrally administered union
territory under the name of Mizoram, and in
1987 it achieved statehood.
Mizoram : culture

The Mizos are one amongst the important


hill tribes within the Indian subcontinent.
Their cultural beliefs and values have given
them a definite Mizo identity. Their vibrant
culture of Mizoram is depicted through the
traditional attires worn by Mizoram women,
called the 'Puan'.

Culture of Mizoram also focuses on different dance


forms like Cheraw, Khuallam, Chailam, Sarlamkai.
Traditional festivals in Mizoram revolve around the
different stages of Jhum cultivation or the seasons.
Chapchar Kut, Thalfavang Kut, Mim Kut and Pawl
Kut are a variety of the key kuts
TRIPURA : INTRODUCTION

Tripura is a state in North-East India. It


shares borders with Bangladesh,
Mizoram and Assam. Tripura is
surrounded by Bangladesh on its north,
south and west. The length of its
international border is 856 km (84 per
cent of its total border).
TRIPURA : CULTURE

The state of Tripura is very rich in its culture


and tradition. Each tribe of the state has its own
cultural activities. They have their distinct
dance and music which are mainly folk in
nature. Folk songs and dance are performed on
occasions like weddings, religious and other
festivals. Bizu Dance, Lebang Boomani Dance,
Garia Dance, Hai Hak dance, Jhum dance and
so on are some of the important dance and song
forms in Tripura.
