GLOCALIZATION
(Globalization and
Localization)
Objectives
1. Distinguish localization, indigenization, and
globalization.
2. Illustrate ways on how the subject could be
localized/indigenized/globalized.
3. Balance between global perspectives and local
contexts in teaching science.
4. Realize the value of localization/indigenization/
globalization in teaching science.
Globalization
Globalization is the process by which
the world, previously isolated through
physical and technological distance,
becomes increasingly interconnected.
It is manifested by the increase in
interaction between peoples around
the world that involves the sharing of
ideas, cultures, goods, services and
investment.

Global Education
• A global education teaches
students to understand
themselves and the world around
them: different cultures,
perspectives, and ways of
accomplishing meaningful,
demanding work.
• Global education at the primary
and secondary levels gives
students the necessary skills to be
leaders in a changing world.

competencies relevant, meaningful, and
EXTU useful to all learners (DepEd Order 32 s. 2015)
ALIZ
ATIO a method of embedding disciplinary material
N in the fabric of the culture, time and
experience of a learner.
CONTEXTUALIZA A form of situated learning – “relating
instructional content to the specific context of
learners’ lives and interest that increases
motivation to learn” (Dirkx and Prenger, 1997)
TION

Is an instructional strategy that:

a) actively involves the learner in the learning process
b) combines content and context
c) uses authentic materials
LOCALIZATION
Localization – the process of
relating learning content
specified in the curriculum
to local information and
materials from the learner’s
community.
Example:
a. A tricycle driven b. A Rolls Royce
by Juan travels at a driven by King
speed of 15 km/h Charles travels at a
along St. Joseph speed of 80 km/h
Street. Compute the along Helsinki.
distance traveled Compute the
after 20mins. distance traveled
after 20mins.
Example:
Compare the animal
and plant cells by
making a model using
local materials like
corn, palay, small rocks
of different colors etc..
(Don’t forget the
rubric)
INDIGENIZATION
Indigenization refers to the process of
enhancing curriculum competencies,
education resources, and teaching-
learning process in relation to the bio-
geographical, historical, and socio-
cultural context of the learners’
community.
Examples
1. List down five (5) observable practices in
the community in protecting the
environment.
2. Pretending you are the Mayor of our
municipality; how can you promote
health awareness in this normal?
don’t
forget.. CONTEXTUALIZA
TION
•Localization and indigenization are the
degrees or levels of doing
contextualization.
•When we localize, we do not
necessarily indigenize.
•When we indigenize, we localize.

The Eagle
and
Chicken
Story

https://www.vedantu.com/
Once upon a time, on a large mountainside
there was an eagle nest with 4 large eagle
eggs inside. One day, an earthquake rocked
the mountain causing one of the eagle’s
eggs to roll down to a chicken farm, located
in the valley below. The chickens raised the
eagle to be a chicken because they were
chickens. The eagle loved his home and his
family, but his soul wanted more. The eagle
looked up and saw a group of powerful
eagles flying together. "Oh, I wish I could fly
like those birds! "You can't fly like those,"
the chickens laughed out loud.
You are a chicken, and chickens
don't fly." The eagle kept looking up
at his real family and wishing he
could be just like them. Every time
the eagle told someone about his
dreams, they told him it couldn't
happen. The eagle came to think
that was true. After a while, the
eagle stopped having dreams and
kept living as a chicken. The eagle
finally died after living a long time
as a chicken.

GLOCALIZATION
“Glocal” refers to the
individual, group,
organization, and
community which is willing
and able to “think globally
and act locally”
https://www.slideserve.com/nuala/glocalisation-and-education-
opportunities-and-threats
"Education must adapt to the
changing dynamics of our
globalized world while
honoring and embracing the
rich cultural heritage and
local contexts of each
learner." - Dr. Yong Zhao
Glocalizing is a new concept in K-12
education that is used to connect global
and local contexts.
Glocalization emphasizes that students learn
about global problems through local examples.
Students learn about how they can practically
apply sustainable development concepts that
affect their local communities. In this way,
students are more likely to take meaningful
actions because they have an easier time
grasping concepts that are locally and culturally
relevant.
Examples:
• students could learn about climate change
by analyzing weather patterns in their
region.
• they could learn about world hunger caused
by desertification and create a local food
drive in their school community.
• they could learn about the importance of
recycling by tracking a product that they use
every day through the product lifestyle.
Application of Glocalization
Topic: Climate Change
1. Print or cut 5 pictures showing the effects of
climate change in the Philippines. Explain
2. Make a poster or slogan on how to reduce the
risks and harmful effects of climate change. (with
rubric)
3. Make a reflection about climate change based
on the movie: A Movie Review.
Application of Glocalization

Topic: Environmental Problems

3. Conduct a science investigatory project
about the existing problem/s in the
environment.
It's not mere syllabus that
depends on the
excellence, it’s the
teachings that are
imparted that would help
a child connect with the
world.
-Hermann J Steinherr-
What to do Reflection Paper
1. Reflecting on the concept of glocalization in
education, how has the integration of global
perceptions and local contexts influenced your teaching
practices and the learning experiences of your
students?
2. What strategies have you implemented to effectively
navigate the balance between global perspectives and
local contexts within your classroom?
3. What self-directed learning will you do to improve
the application of glocalization in your classroom?
