(Definition)

The modern age regarded as a time in which

information has become a commodity that is quickly
and widely disseminated and easily available
especially through the use of computer technology.
a period beginning about 1975 and characterized
by the gathering and almost instantaneous
transmission of vast amounts of information and by
the rise of information-based industries.

Brief History

 The Informatio n Age began around the 1970s and is s till going on
today. It is als o kno wn as the Computer Age, Digital Age, or New
Media Age. This era brought about a time period in which people
could acces s information and knowledge easily.

 The beginnings of mass communication can be traced back to the

invention of the printing press.
 Jo hannes Gutenberg, invented the print ing pres s around 1440. This
inv ention was a res ult of finding a way to improve the manual,
tedious , and s low printing methods .

 A printing press is a device that applies press ure to an inked

surface lying on a print medium, such as cloth or paper, to trans fer
ink. With the rise of the printing press, the printing revolution
occurred which illus trated the tremendous social change brought
by the wide circulation of informat ion.

 The printing pres s made the mas s production of bo oks pos sible
which made books acces sible not only t o t he upper class .

As years progressed, calculations
became involved in
communication due to the rapid
developments in the trade sector.
Back then, people who compiled
actuarial tables and did
engineering calculations served
as “computers”.
• United States created the Harvard Mark 1

A general purpose electromechanical

computer that was 50 feet long and
capable of doing calculations in
seconds that usually took people
hours.
At the same time, Britain needed
mathematicians to crack the German
Navy's Enigma code .

The Enigma was an enciphering

machine that the German armed forces
used to securely send messages.
Turing, working on the side of
the Allies, invented Bombe, an
electromechanical machine
Alan Turing that enabled the British to
decipher encrypted messages
of the German Enigma machine.
This contribution of Turing
along with other cryptologists
shortened the war by two years
(Munro, 2012).
On Computable Numbers, with an Application to the
Entscheidungsproblem - first published in 1937. Turing
presented a theoretical machine called the Turing machine
that can solve any problem from simple instructions encoded
on a paper tape. He also demonstrated the simulation of the
Turing machine to construct a single Universal Machine.
This became the foundation of computer science and the
invention of a machine later called a computer, that can
solve any problem by performing any task from a written
program (DeHaan, 2012).
The Universal Turing Machine
In 1976 Steve Wozniak, co-founder
of Apple Inc., developed the
computer that made him famous:
the Apple I.
Steve Jobs, Wozniak's friend,
suggested to sell the Apple I as a
fully assembled printed circuit
board. This jumpstarted their career
as founders of Apple Inc.

Maybe you should rethink
your life choices...
If you are a youtuber: Per view, advertisers on average pay $0.18.
If your channel receives 1,000 views, it's worth $18. Google keeps
45 percent of what is made, so a YouTuber would make (on
average) $9.90 per 1,000 views

social media gave us more

Argument 2: Social Media
makes us more open to
other cultures
we become exposed to diversity
social media has become a place where peo ple appropriat e yo ur views and attitudes
towards different cultures and pers pectiv es .
things that i learned (not in school) but
on the internet....

- cultural appropriation vs. cultural appreciation

-different types of gender identity (and how we as humanbeings should respect all genders )

-religion should not separate us people but instead we should find ways to respect each
o ther's beliefs .
it promotes the
interconnectedness and
interdependence of our culturally
diverse world
-The communication tha t occurs in these online contexts promotes int eractive dialogues
that build understanding o f different points of view.

-In social media, people have the opportunity to expres s their opinions to the public and
participate in conversations and dialogue through a co mmon virtual medium.

“New social media means that everyone is a publisher and everyone is a critic”

“we are connected....yet

-Sherry Turkle
“we are connected but alone”
The access that people have on the int ernet and s ocial media specifically has become too
easy. It has made the language lazy and t hus resulting people uninteres ted in meeting
o thers in perso n, which eliminat es any chance of deep and meaningful conversation.

People have started los ing their ability to communicate efficiently, which is a tes tament, to
what kind of tot al control s ocial media has over their liv es. Overall, s ocial media can be
beneficial if used wisely and in the proper proportion.
