 Generation
The IPPs consist of power
plants which are owned by Power Plants
private companies.
 They usually sell the
electricity to the government.

Power Plants power plants owned

Owned by by Independent
Government Power Producers
(IPPs)
Generation
The Renewable Energy resources based power
plants are mostly owned by IPPs. They are
controlled by National Electric Power
Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and National
Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC).
All nuclear power plants are governed by
Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC).

Government owned thermal power plants are

divided into four generation companies called
(GENCOs). They are controlled by Pakistan
Electric Power Company (PEPCO).

The hydro power plants are installed, operated

and maintained by Water and Power
Development Authority (WAPDA) Power Wing.

 Why Unit Price in Pakistan is Very High ?
In Pakistan, per unit price of electricity is very high. One of the reason for
this high per unit price is due to high share of thermal power plants in
power generation.

If the share of hydro and thermal plants may be reversed, then per unit
price can be reduced significantly. It is because, hydro power plants
produces cheaper electrical energy as compared to thermal power plants.

Till today, per unit cost of electrical energy obtained through Mangla hydro
power plant is 1.57 Pakistani rupees and Tarbela hydro power plant is 1.62
Pakistani rupees.

On the other hand, per unit price of electrical energy from thermal power
plant of Faisalabad is around 12.36 Pakistani rupees.

The Tarbela Dam is the biggest hydro power plant in Pakistan.

It is the biggest power plant in Pakistan among all types of power plants.
 Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO):
PEPCO has been fully empowered and is responsible for the management of all
the affairs of ten Distribution Companies (DISCOs), four Generation Companies
(GENCOs) and a National Transmission Dispatch Company (NTDC).

K-Electric (KE) (formerly known as Karachi Electric Supply
Company) is a privately owned utility managing all three key
stages – generation, transmission and distribution – of producing
and delivering energy to consumers of Karachi region.

 Transmission Companies (TRANCOs) of Pakistan:
 TRANCOs of Pakistan consists of National Transmission and Despatch
Company (NTDC) which links Power Generation Units with Load Centers
spread all over the country.
 NTDC performs planning, designing, construction, Operation and
Maintenance of 500/220kV transmission line in the Pakistan.
 NTDC operates and maintains Sixteen 500 KV and Forty Two 220 KV Grid
Stations, transmission line in Pakistan.

 Highest Transmission Voltage in Pakistan:

At Present, the highest

voltage used for transmission
in Pakistan is 500 kV.

However, In future, two 765 kV

transmission line are going to be
installed at:
1. Diamer Bhasha Dam
2. Dasu Dam.
