EPILEPTIC LEARNERS
Epilepsy: This is a disorder of the brain characterised by repeated
seizures.
A seizure is usually defined as a sudden alteration of behaviour due to
a temporary change in the electrical functioning of the brain.
An epileptic learner: This is a learner who has a disorder of the brain
characterized by the repeated seizures.
CAUSES OF EPILEPSY
• Genetical mutation
• Genetic inheritance
• Head injuries
• Brain conditions
• Infectious diseases

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS


• Breathing difficulty
• Loss of consciousness
• Uncontrollable Jerking movements of arms and legs
• Becoming stiff
• Psychological symptoms for example fear.
EFFECTS OF EPILEPSY

• Drowning
• Exposure to accidents
• Segregation
• Problems with speaking clearly.
• Hearing loss
• Falling
• Absenteeism from school

THEIR STUDIES.
• Frequent repetition of learning material
• Redirection on practical activities
• Memory boosting strategies such as doing recaps
• Extra time for assignments and exams
• Non timed assignments to measure performance
• Break down tasks into simpler and easily understandable tasks
• Provide several brief tests instead of the long ones
• Counselling and guidance
• Avoiding triggers such as flashing bright lights.
• Stress management.
• Diet management( fatty foods and carbohydrates)
• Safety precaution in case of an attack. For example avoid movements of water shores and high ways
SICKLE CELLS
• Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood
cells.
CAUSES OF SICKLE CELLS
• Genetic inheritance
• Haemoglobin mutation
Other cause may include;
• Sickle shaped red blood cells
• Sickle cell symptoms
• Population Genetics
SYMPTOMS OF SICKLE CELL

• Jaundice( Yellowing of skin and whitening of the eyes)


• Painful cries
• Abnormal swellings of hands and feet
• Fatigue due to low oxygen in the body
• Delayed growth
• Joint pains.
EFFECTS OF SICKLE CELL

• Breathing problem
• High body temperatures
• painful constant erection in men
• Organ damage
• Prone to infections
• Stunted growth

• Sufficient hydration.
• Guiding and counselling
• Moderate physical exercises
• Give learners extra attention
• Keep close communication with the parents and medical personnel of the
learner
HIV/AIDS

• HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus


• HIV: This is a virus that attacks the body’s immune system and weakens
the white blood cells thus making it easier for other diseases like
TB,cancer to take advantage of someone's health.
• AIDS- Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
• AIDS is a condition that happens as a result of HIV infection when then
immune system is severely weakened.
CAUSES OF HIV/AIDS
• Unprotected sexual intercourse
• Sharing of sharp objects
• Mother to child transmission.
• Coming in contact with infected blood during accidents
• Occupational exposures especially health workers.
SYMPTOMS OF HIV/AIDS
• Loss of body weight.
• Fever
• Severe illness.
• Skin disorders/rashes
• Sore throats.
• Chronic diarrhoea.
• Severe cough

ASTHMATIC LEARNERS
• Asthma: This is a chronic condition in which one’s air ways narrows, swells and may
produce extra mucus thus making it difficult to breathe. Therefore a learner with this
condition is an asthmatic learner
CAUSES OF ASTHMA

• Hereditary
• Viral inspections
• Occupation hazards such as breathing in chemicals
• Allergies
• Obesity
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• Chest tightness
• Shortness of breath
• Coughing
• Wheezing( breathing with whistling sound)
• Trouble sleeping
EFFECTS OF ASTHMA

• Irregular school attendance/Absenteeism


• Severe breathing difficulties
• Death in severe cases
• Regular emergency hospital visits
• School drop outs
• Stigma/Discrimination

• Ensuring inhalers are readily available to learners
• Engaging in weekly physical activities as prescribed by the physician.
• Counselling and Guiding the Asthmatic Learner’s
• Reduce Learners Contact to Air Pollutants
• Extra-time to complete tasks/assignments
AUTISM

Autism: It’s a brain disorder that brings difficulty in


communication and behaviour.
Autistic learners are learners having problems/difficulties in
social communication and interaction.
CAUSES OF AUTISM

• Exposure to environmental toxins.


• Low birth weight
• Genetic Mutation(Alteration in the Genes)
• Heredity
• Being Born by Older Parents.
EFFECTS OF AUTISM

• Brings difficulty in communication


• Inferiority Complex
• Discrimination
• Delay in Learning
• School Dropout due to demotivation
• Failure to express/control emotions

• Regular motivation to autistic learners


• Constant Counselling and guidance.
• Visual Supports(Using pictorials and Demonstration)
• Providing Appropriate Feedback to the learners with
ASD

• Unusual mood or emotional Reactions.
• Difficulty in mobility/movements
• Delayed Learning Skills
• Inattentive Behaviour
• Difficulties in Communication.
