TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

Lecturer: Ms. Benedicta R. Buenaventura

CAL Faculty Member
1.)Formal Type- also referred to as “ official communication”

-conducted through a pre- determined channel

-It follows a certain protocol
-This could be considered a reliable source of information
2.) Informal Type – It is popular, often performed by word
of mouth transfer of information.
- is unofficial yet provocative, spontaneous and free-
flowing and is not restricted by any formal structure
and standards
- also less reliable or accurate
-Mostly oral, with no documentation evidence
- considered a “hearsay”
- considered as “user-friendly”
C.) Oral (Face-to-face )Type- most common and most powerful type
of communication
-Direct sending of messages can be formal( formal meeting or
seminar) or informal ( with family and friends.)
- very engaging
- it does not offer an opportunity to tune in, revise, revoke and

fix what was already expressed.

D. Oral (Distance) Type- It has made the world a smaller and

more accessible place.

- In this type, , the speaker’s tone of voice and pace of
delivery take priority over other expressions.
-For effective oral communication over distance, one must
give higher priority to speaker’s listening. When he fails to
listen to his audience, he finds that people in the discussion
attempt to speak at the same time .
(continuation)

Oral distance requires careful listening skill and attention in

missed and non-verbal signals one would receive in face –to-
face communication such as anger, friendliness, sarcasm
among others.
It must be backed up with written communication when
possible.
VERBAL VS. NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Verbal communication is any communication that uses words
to share information with others. These words may be both
spoken and written.
Nonverbal communication- is the transfer of information
through the use of body language including eye contact,
facial expressions, gestures and more (Keiling, H. 2021)

Example: smiling when you meet someone conveys

friendliness, acceptance and openness.
Types of Non-Verbal Communication:
1. Facial Expression
2. Amount of Eye Contact
3. Gestures
4. Touch
5. Body movements and posture
6. Appearance
7. Space
Note : Stress compromises ability to communicate.
When one is stressed s/he is more likely to misread other
people, send confusing or off-putting nonverbal signals
and lapse into unhealthy knee-jerk pattern of behavior.
Emotions are contagious .
When one is stressed , it is best to take a time out.
VOCAL COMMUNICATION
It has the power to weaken or strengthen the verbal
message.
They are limited to sounds, expressions, tone and style
of the voice without the use of words. A vocal cue is an
infection used to deliver a certain message.
Vocal is the voice of the speaker his/her vocal variety,
quality, rate. volume, and vocalized pauses.
'Written Communication’ - means the sending of
messages, orders or instructions in writing through
letters, circulars, manuals, reports, telegrams, office
memos, bulletins, etc.
