Composing an

informative essay
We expose ourselves to language in all aspects of our
lives. Knowing how to write an essay, as an extended
piece of written language, is a skill that you can use
throughout your life. The ability to organize ideas that
you use in constructing an essay will help you write
business letters, company memos, and marketing
materials for your clubs and organizations. In this
lesson, you will be engaged in activities that will
develop your competencies in writing and
compositions.
As we go through the lesson, you are expected to:

a. define informative essay.


b. enumerate the structure or parts: of the
essay and the steps in writing an informative essay.
c. compose an informative essay.
Learning task 1 : Proper Handwashing
Regular and proper handwashing is one of the
best ways to remove germs or virus, avoid getting
sick, and prevent the spread of germs or virus to
others. Due to Covid -19 pandemic, the Department
of Health in the Phillipines releasd the ways of
proper handwashing to protect us and our family
from the virus.
Learning task 1. Proper handswashing
Directions: Arrange the basic steps in proper
handwahing by the Department of Health below
by writing number 1-4 beside the picture.
Learning task 2. Putting it All Together
Directions: Using the sentence in Learning
Task 1, write a paragraph about proper
handwashing.
The piece of writing you were trying to compose in
Learning task 1 is an example of an informative
essay. An informative essay explains something, tell
something or it gives directions. This is also called an
expository essay because it aims to expose or
display an information, educate the readers
regarding a certain topic which will be beneficial to
the readers. Informative essay is based on facts and
nor personal feeling, emotions, or opinion of the
writer.
Five main types of
informative essays.
1. Process Essay. In this type of writing, you
need to describe the process of phenomenon.
Also known as ‘ How-To’ essay, a process
essay is the type of essay where the writer
needs to provide detailed information on the
chronological order of performing a process.
2. Analysis Essay. In this type of essay, you look
into a set of data or an image or at a text and
analyze the information. You conclude and
make interpretations on information.
3. Classification essay. In a classification essay, this
are categorized into different categories, and the
things are described accordingly.
4. Definition Essay. This is the type of essay where
the writer describes something. This essay is not
necessarily a dictionary definition but a new and
creative way to think about the subject.
5. Cause / Effect Essay. This is the type of
essay where the author talks about the cause
of a phenomenon, event or idea and then
describes the effect that has in today’s world,
on the environment and the people.
Three basic part
of an essay
1. Introduction. This is the first two or more sentences that
will grab the interest of the readers. A good introduction
with a solid hook and thesis will keep the reader
engaged throughout the essay. You may use a literary
quote or a famous people saying, a question or a story
related to the theme as part of your introduction. The last
sentence of the opening paragraph will usually contain
the point of the informative essay, also called the thesis
statement.. Generally it is the most important sentence in
the entire essay, as it sets forth the direction for the part
of essay.
2. Body . This part gives the supporting sentences
that explain and prove your topic sentence. Here,
you must given the facts that support your thesis
statement and present trustworthy sources to
clarify where you have gotten your information.
All the information that you have collected on the
topic of your informative essay should be
mentioned in section.
3. Conclusion. This part summarize your informative
essay. After reading a lengthy informative essay, the
reader needs to refresh all the information they have
just learned. That is why you will find the most
conclusions briefly repeat the thesis statement and
every topic sentence of the essay. It is advisable that
you write at least three to five sentences for your
conclusion for it not to become too explanatory
which you have already done on the previous part
Steps in Writing an
information essay
1. Brainstorm Ideas.
Brainstorm to come up with the list of great
topics. Think about which of the potential
topics would be most beneficial for the
reader. Conduct research to find which of the
offered topics has most of the related,
credible, and up-to-date materials before
making final decision.
2. Choose a topic
after narrowing down your opinion, choose a
topic that interest you. It would be good if it is
something that you are most passionate about
so you can write in great details. Choose a topic
that you can support with evidence facts, and
statistics.
3. Create a format
the most effective format is using the essential
parts of an essay (Introduction, Body, and
Conclusion)
4. Write your essay
After choosing the topic, write your essay. Create a
thesis statement and outline of arguments that
will form the essay. Try to present it in a way
that you are educating the readers. Integrate
research evidence with properly citations and
references.
5. Revise, Recheck and edit
Once done with the essay., read the essay that you
have written and check if you have not missed out
any points. If needed, make the edits, to craft a well-
developed essay.
