NODES OR LOGISTIC PLATFORMS:
DEFINITION
Breaking points or areas of the transport and logistic chains, where
technical and added value activities and functions gather

The denomination logistic platform established by EUROPLATFORMS in

1992: “it’s a delimited area, where, through different operators, all the
activities related to transport, logistics and goods distribution, are carried
out, both for national and international transport.
These operators can be owners or leaseholders of the buildings,
equipments and installations (warehouses, stockage areas, offices,
parking places, wharves…) which are built up at the centre.
A platform must have a free attendance system, for all the companies
interested in the advertised activities. It must also be equipped with all
the necessary collective equipment for a good running of the activities
described anf for understanding common services for the people and the
users’ vehicles.

This is necessarily managed by a unique public or private entity".

TYPOLOGIES OF LOGISTIC PLATFORMS

LOGISTIC PLATFORMS WITH ONLY ONE MEAN OF TRANSPORT

Road centres or centres of transport services
Urban distribution centres or City-Logistics
Distribution parks or Distriparks
Transport centres

LOGISTIC AREAS

MULTIMODAL AREAS
TYPES OF FUNCTIONAL AREAS IN LOGISTIC
PLATFORMS
These areas include service activities in gneral, without handling of goods.
Such activities are supporting services to the means of transport, companies
and/or people.

 General services area:

 Specialized service areas:

• Service area for people (café, restaurant,

• Dangerous goods area
communication centre, rest areas, etc.)
• Service area for vehicles (service station,
garages, commercial centre of supplies
and outlets, areas for semi-trailers and  Central services areas
tanks wash, etc.)
(offices of the centre, services of
• Administrative and commercial area
maintenance, cleaning, safety,
• Areas of cargo contracting fire brigade, etc.)
• Area of customs or paracustoms services

PLATFORMS
LOGISTIC AREAS

These are functional areas including installations for activities involving the
handling of goods.

 Non-specialized logistic areas

 They welcome companies of transport, storage, handling,
distribution of goods, etc., restricted to the profitable activities, but
including added value logistic activities

 Specialized or mono-functional logistic areas:

 Food and agriculture platforms
 Logistic platforms for bulks
 Logistic areas for dangerous goods
 Logistic areas for vehicles
 Platforms in customs rule and/or paracustoms activities

MULTIMODAL AREAS

Multimodal areas railway-road

 These are the areas including railway terminals of multimodal transport and
the directly related services.

Multimodal areas air-road (first rate installations)

 These are necessarily located inside the airports, because all the required
functions for the cargo clearance from the plane to the surface vehicle and
vice versa are carried out at the airport.

Multimodal areas maritime or fluvial means-land means

 In the case of maritime-road multimodality, the multimodal area is located
at the Maritime Terminal, where the process of modal transference develops,
as well as the processes linked to the shipment and unloading activities. This
area is by no means integrated within a logistic platform, which can be
adjacent to the terminal.
HISTORICAL EVOLUTION OF LOGISTIC
PLATFORMS NEEDS

BETTER DEVELOPED DEMANDS:

ORIGINAL DEMANDS: SPECIALIZED AND MULTIMODAL
URBAN NEEDS RELATED LOGISTICS
TO THE TRANSPORT OF GOODS * Railway, maritime or air multimodality
* Concentration of advanced logistic services
* Parking needs * Means of regional economic activities
* Cargo contracting areas
* Needs for warehouses in cities

EVOLUTION OF DEMANDS:
NEEDS OF THE TRANSPORT OF GOODS SECTOR

* Good locations for implantation

* Competitive prices
* Logistic development oportunities
