POPULAR CULTURE
• Popular culture (also known as pop culture)
is commonly recognized by members of a
society as a collection of behaviors, values,
and artifacts that govern or predominate in a
society at a given time point.
HISTORY
OF THE
POPULAR
CULTURE
 Popular culture can be traced back to the Spanish period of the Philippines.
It was employed and brought by the Spanish to the native Filipinos through
literature and plays to capture their hearts; thus, emphasizing the colonial
origins of popular culture in the Philippines.

 It began as a replacement of the native culture with a Christian and

European tradition through the children of the native elites. They became
the means for appeasing the natives through vernacular literary forms. One
such popular form was the representation of Jesus Christ’s suffering and
resurrection through plays or drama. This form served as a vessel for the
spread of Christianity while the songs and comedy were vessels for the
Spanish monarchy.

 Popular culture was introduced to the Philippines to win the Filipino

populace to the ideology of the Spanish regime. It was created to promote
the Church and the State’s interest.
 When the Americans came to colonize the Philippines, the appropriately-
called popular culture was introduced to the Philippines. The printing press,
radio, television, and film paved the way for the speedy circulation of
popular culture forms. Hollywood films reigned over the Philippine market.

 According to Bienvenido Lumbera, popular literature is considered a

commodity and it is intended for a mass market. As a commodity, it was
seen as a threat to “serious artistic work” because the writers favored the
desires of publishers and editors who were more concerned with sales
rather than aesthetics. Additionally, popular culture is not caused by the
populace but instead, it is caused either by the ruling elite or members of a
chose few who are under the employ of those elite for the consumption of
the populace.
Like other countries, Philippines has it’s own contribution to the development of
popular culture. Look at this picture and try to remember few important events in
our country.

online streaming sites are made
available for more convenient way of
watching TV shows and movies. “Netflix”
for example is the most common used by
Filipinos nowadays.
o Film
If popular culture is indeed “the culture of
the people”, then such worldwide
popularity justifies the consideration of film
as perhaps the iconic media form of
popular culture. A century after its
invention, fil continues to both reflect and
shape the popular culture of individual
nations and the global village.
o Music and Dance
Music and dance play a significant role in
Philippine popular culture. Filipino pop music,
otherwise known as Original Pilipino Music or OPM,
refers broadly to the pop music that first emerged in
D

the Philippines in the early ‘70s and has since come

to dominate radio airplay and karaoke playlists in the
Filipino market and beyond. Some examples would
be:
"Anak" by Freddie Aguilar - A classic Filipino
ballad that gained international recognition

"Huling Sandali" by December Avenue and

Moira dela Torre

"Huling El Bimbo" by Eraserheads - A

seminal song of the 90s alternative rock
scene, etc.
On the other hands, dance is a genre
that features Filipino artists and
composers, and traditional dance
forms like Tinikling and Cariñosa
which are performed during cultural
events.
o Sports
An inherent part of being a Filipino is the
love for sports, or merely, the enjoyment of it.
The Filipino, at a young age, is taught a wide
array of sports – be it at home or in school.
This ranges from basketball, volleyball, or
even playing chess, badminton and billiards.
As the Philippines continues to make itself
known on the world stage as a developing
country, there is also a rising need to redefine
the country’s cultural identity. In that way,
Filipinos may make a positive impact on the
nation and enable them to achieve their goals
and progress in life.

While there’s a variety of foreign brands in
Philippines, homegrown brands thrive alongside
them with their locally sourced materials, talents
of Filipino craftsmen and artisans, and in some
cases, native techniques. Too few — but not none
at all. All over the world, sustainable, ethical and
circular fashion is making a name for itself, and in
the Philippines, the movement, mostly led by
women, is starting to take shape. Of course, the
simplest way to avoid the perils of fast fashion is to
simply buy less; or when you do, to buy from
affordable second-hand thrift shops, more
popularly known as the ukay-ukay.
