Installation of dampers

Passive dampers are generally installed between storeys

by diagonal or chevron braces, as shown in Fig. 1aand1b. Fig. 1. General
However, those installation methods may result in
deformation in dampers that are not large enough to
installation
dissipate significant vibration energy. To enhance
damper deformation various toggle systems shown in
scheme of
Fig. 2 have been developed. Table 1 shows the relative
deformation in a viscous damper when unit lateral passive dampers:
displacement occurs in a single storey structure with
the damper installed by various schemes (Sigaher and (a) diagonal
Constantinou 2003). The resultant damping ratio of
the structure is also presented. It canbe observed that brace, (b) inverse
by using the amplifiers the relative deformation of a
damper and damping ratio of a structure can be V
significantly increased. However, additional cost and
space are required for increased performance of the
damper

Mechanical and dynamic properties of VEDs

During the cyclic loading test, the intermediate shear steel plate of the
VED will drive the high-damping viscoelastomer to produce shear
deformation and dissipate energy. The common deformation of the VED
in tension and compression. In order to further investigate the behavior
differences of the VEDs under various loading conditions, a number of
specific mechanical properties are calculated for comparison.
•The viscoelastic damper has perfect energy dissipation capacity with
nearly full ellipse hysteretic curves at low temperature.
•The loading frequency and displacement amplitude have important
influence on the dynamic properties of the viscoelastic damper.
•The storage modulus and loss factor increase quickly with increasing
frequency, while decrease when the displacement amplitude increases.
•Viscoelastic dampers can serve in a wide temperatures ranges (−20–
50°C) with larger displacements. The present work only studies the
viscoelastic damper at −5°C with displacements 0.2–2.0 mm
