ABSTRACT
The GSM Based Water Quality Monitoring and Notification System is a low-cost and
easy-to use solution designed to monitor and analyze the quality of water. The system uses
turbidity and pH sensors to measure the amount of impurities and level of acidity or
alkalinity present in the water. The sensor data is collected by an Arduino board, which is
programmed to transmit the data to a mobile phone through a GSM module. The system
incorporates an alarm function that alerts users when the sensor readings exceed pre-set
threshold values, enabling timely preventive or corrective actions to be taken. This system
ensures water quality by providing real-time information, reducing the risk of health
hazards associated with contaminated water.
INTRODUCTION

Water is the most important natural resource, and its quality has a significant impact on human
health and the environment. In many places, water quality is continuously monitored to identify
and address potential issues before they become significant problems. With the advances in
technology, it is now possible to monitor water quality remotely.
Water quality monitoring is the process of assessing and analyzing the physical, chemical, and
biological characteristics of water bodies. It plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and
sustainability of water resources.
The importance of water quality monitoring can be summarized as follows: human health
protection ,ecosystem health assessment pollution control and prevention, water resource
management Compliance with regulations.
The components used in the system: turbidity sensor, pH sensor, Arduino GSM, two inductors,
two capacitors, and two resistors (POT-HG)
Statement Of Problems

Water pollution is a major concern for human civilization. Water is essential for life and the
wellbeing of all living organisms, and the contamination of water can have a detrimental effect
on not only human health but also on other ecosystems. In many parts of the world,
monitoring water quality is still done manually and is considered time-consuming,
complicated, and expensive. Therefore, there is a need to develop a water quality monitoring
system that can provide real-time monitoring data of water quality parameters such as
turbidity and pH levels. The proposed system aims to address these challenges by developing
a GSM-based water quality monitoring and notification system using turbidity and pH
sensors, Arduino, and GSM.
Objectives

General Objective

The main objectives of this project are:

• To design a GSM-based water quality monitoring system that allows remote monitoring of
water quality.

Specific Objectives

 To develop a low-cost, reliable, and efficient water quality monitoring system using turbidity
and pH sensors, Arduino, and GSM technology.

 To measure and analyze the water quality parameters such as turbidity and pH level of water
in real-time.
 To develop efficient algorithms and software to facilitate automated analysis, data
storage and sharing of water quality parameters over long periods.

 To generate automatic notification alerts to the stakeholders concerned in case of

suspected contamination or change in the water quality parameters beyond threshold
limit.

 To establish a sustainable system for long-term monitoring of water quality parameters

in real-time with remote accessibility using the GSM technology.

 To promote eco-friendly measures in interventions for clean and safe water provision
using innovative technology adapting precision agriculture models.
Methodology
In the process of our project development, we will follow the following outlined
methodical procedure.

System Overview

Overall, the system architecture involves connecting and integrating these components as
follows: the turbidity sensor and pH sensor are connected to the Arduino GSM module
through appropriate electronic circuits built using the inductors, capacitors, and resistors.
The Arduino GSM module is then connected to a power source and a GSM network for data
transmission. The collected data can be further analyzed and visualized to make informed
decisions and take necessary actions to maintain water quality.

Significance of the Project
The significance of the research for a GSM-based water quality monitoring and notification
system is quite substantial in the present-day scenario. With the advancement of technology,
it has become mandatory to develop novel and efficient strategies to measure and maintain
the water quality, which is a critical aspect of environmental protection. The utilization of
turbidity sensors, pH sensors, Arduino, and GSM technology can enhance the accuracy and
efficiency of water quality monitoring systems, making them more reliable and efficient.
The real-time monitoring and automatic notification system provided by the GSM-based
water quality monitoring system can enable immediate response and corrective measures
based on the readings taken by the sensors. Additionally, the system can be helpful for
researchers, environmentalists, and policymakers to understand the dynamics of water
quality, and provide insights into the factors that impact the water quality of different areas.
Scope of the Project
The scope of the research for GSM based water quality monitoring and
notification system using turbidity sensor, pH sensor, Arduino and GSM is to
design a system that can detect water quality parameters and send
notifications to appropriate authorities in case of water contamination. The
main objective is to provide an early warning system for water
contamination incidents and minimize the potential health risks associated
with it.
Materials used in the system

Turbidity sensor

The turbidity sensor is used to measure the cloudiness or haziness of water, which
indicates the presence of suspended particles. It operates by emitting light into the
water and measuring the amount of light scattered back to the sensor. This helps to
determine the water's clarity and provides insights into potential contaminants.
pH sensor
The pH sensor measures the acidity or alkalinity levels in the water. It detects the
concentration of hydrogen ions, which is a crucial parameter in determining water
quality. Monitoring pH levels in water bodies helps to identify potential pollution
sources and assess the health of aquatic ecosystems.
Arduino uno

The Arduino GSM module is responsible for data transmission and communication. It
integrates with a GSM network to send water quality data to a centralized monitoring
station or database. This enables real-time monitoring and immediate response to any
deviations from the desired water quality standards.
Inductors,capacitor and resistors
The two inductors, two capacitors, and three resistors (POT-HG) are essential for building
electronic circuits that interface the sensors with the Arduino GSM module. These
components are used for signal conditioning, amplification, and filtering purposes. They
ensure accurate measurements by providing stable and reliable signals to the Arduino
GSM module. There also materials we used to display LCD and Virtual terminal.
Results
The GSM based water quality monitoring and notification system was successfully
implemented using turbidity sensor, pH sensor, Arduino GSM, two inductors, two
capacitors, and two resistors (POT-HG). The system was tested in a water tank and
provided accurate readings of turbidity and pH values in real-time. The readings were
transmitted to the user's mobile phone through SMS. The system was able to send
notifications when the water quality exceeded the standard threshold values set by the
user.

Conclusion

This study proposes a GSM-based water quality monitoring and notification system
using turbidity and pH sensors, Arduino GSM, two inductors, two capacitors, and
two resistors. The developed system enables real-time monitoring of water quality
parameters, such as turbidity and pH, and sends notifications to the users' mobile
phones when water quality deviates from the desired range. The system
demonstrated reliable and accurate monitoring capabilities, allowing users to
remotely monitor the water quality in real-time.
