Alternating

Series
Alternating Series
Two versions:

• When odd-extended terms are negative

∑ (−1) ∙ 𝑎𝑘=− 𝑎1 + 𝑎2 −𝑎3 +… .

𝑘

𝑘=1
• When even-extended are negative

∑ ( −1) ∙ 𝑎𝑘=𝑎1 − 𝑎2+ 𝑎3 +… .

𝑘

𝑘=1
Alternating Test
• Recalldoes not guarantee convergence of the series

In case of alternating series ..

• Must converge if

is decreasing sequence

(that is ≤ for all K)

Alternating Test
• Starting out by calculating
lim 𝑎 𝑘
𝑘→∞

• If limit ≠ 0, you know it diverges

• If the limit = 0
• Proceed to verify is decreasing sequence
Using l`Hopital`s Rule
• Checking for l`Hopital`s rule
may be useful

• Consider

lim 𝑎 𝑘=?
• Find 𝑘→∞

1
lim ln 𝑥 lim
𝑘→ ∞ 𝑥
= 𝑘→∞ =0
𝑥 1
Absolute Converge
• Consider where the general terms vary sign

• The alternation of the sign may not may not be any regular pattern

• If converges … does

• This is called absolute converge
