TThehistory of televisionrecordstheworkofnumerousengineersandinventorsin severalcountriesovermanydecades.Thefundamentalprinciplesoftelevisionwere initiallyexploredusingelectromechanicalmethodstoscan,transmitandreproducean image.Aselectroniccameraanddisplaytubeswereperfected,electromechanical televisiongavewaytoall-electronicbroadcasttelevisionsystemsinnearlyall applications. Thebeginningsofmechanicaltelevisioncanbetracedbacktothediscoveryofthe photoconductivityoftheelementseleniumbyWilloughbySmithin1873,the inventionofascanningdiskbyPaulGottliebNipkowin1884andJohnLogieBaird's demonstrationoftelevisedmovingimagesin1926. Asa23-year-oldGermanuniversitystudent,PaulNipkowproposedandpatentedthe firstelectromechanicaltelevisionsystemin1884.[1]Althoughheneverbuiltaworking modelofthesystem,variationsofNipkow'sspinning-disk"imagerasterizer"for televisionbecameexceedinglycommon,andremainedinuseuntil1939.[2] ConstantinPerskyihadcoinedthewordtelevisioninapaperreadtotheInternational ElectricityCongressattheInternationalWorldFairinParisonAugust25,1900. Perskyi'spaperreviewedtheexistingelectromechanicaltechnologies,mentioningthe workofNipkowandothers.[3]

However,itwasnotuntil1907thatdevelopmentsinamplificationtubetechnology,by LeeDeForestandArthurKornamongothers,madethedesignpractical.[4]Thefirstdemonstration oftheinstantaneoustransmissionofstillsilhouetteimageswasbyGeorgesRignouxandA.
