Outline
What is FAO ?
• Specialized agency of the United Nations.
• It is dedicated to addressing global issues related to hunger, food
security, agriculture and rural development
History
• Established on 16 October 1945 in Quebec city, Canada. It is also
celebrated as world food day.
• In 1951, it’s headquarters were moved from Washington DC united
states to Rome, Italy.
• It is composed of 195 members, including 194 countries and the
European Union.
• The headquarters of the FAO is located in Rome, Italy. FAO also
maintains Regional offices around the world and works in over 130
countries worldwide.
Goals
Three main goals
• The eradication of hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.
• The elimination of poverty and the driving forward of economic and
social progress for all.
• The sustainable management and utilization of natural resources
including land, water, air, climate and genetic resources for the
benefit of present and future generations.
Motto

It’s latin motto, Fiat Panis, translates as “ let there be bread”


Mandate
• FAO’s mandate is to build a world without hunger through technical
cooperation and assistance. It has five strategic objectives.

• Help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition


• Make agriculture, forestry, and fisheries more productive and
sustainable.
• Reduce rural poverty
• Enable inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems
• Increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises.

• Fisheries and aquaculture
• Forestry
• Natural resource management
• Environment and technical cooperation
FAO in Nepal
• Starts its work in Nepal in 1951, the year Nepal became its member.
• At present, a significant portion of FAO’s work is centered on putting
into action the GoN agriculture perspective plan.
• Works in close coordination and cooperation with GoN aiming to
• Promote agricultural development,achieving food and nutrition
security, uplifting livelihoods of rural farming community and
promoting sustainable natural resource management
• Through policy support strengthening institutional capacity and
providing technical assistance in the implementation of projects and
programmes aligning with the Gov. strategies and priorities.

• Support to operationalize the “one health strategy 2019” of the GoN.
• Strengthening capacity of public and private sectors on organic
agriculture in karnali.
• Support to good dairy practices for dairy sector development
• Support to formulate sustainable mountain development agenda
Budget
• FAO regular program budget is funded by its members, through
contributions set at the FAO conference
conclusion
• FAO provides an umbrella under which countries can identify strategic
priorities and coordinate their efforts to find solutions and plan of
actions to pressing problems affecting food and agricultural
production.
