Transactional Model

of Communication
Transactional Model of
Communication
In transactional model, senders, and receivers both are known as
communicators, and both play equally important role in
communication. Transactional model relates communication with
social reality, cultural up-bringing and relational context
(relationships). It describes communication as a process in which
communicators generate social realities within social, relational,
and cultural contexts. Non-verbal feedback like gestures, body
language, is also considered as feedback in this model. Different
models that follow transactional model of communication are the
Barnlund’s Transactional Model, Helical Model, and Becker’s
Mosaic Model.
The transactional model of communication is
often used for interpersonal communication.
Here both the senders and receivers of
messages must be active at the same time to
keep the communication open. This is why
transactional communication in the interaction
model can’t occur in case the person who is
receiving the message is unable to listen to
what the sender has said. This interaction model
encourages communicators to create
relationships, engage in dialogues to create
communities, shape self-concept and build
intercultural alliances through the exchange of
messages.

Helical
Model
Helix
An object having a three-
dimentional shape like that of a
wire wound uniformely around a
cylinder or a cone
Helical Model
The model believes that communication process is just
like a helix which moves forward as well as comes
backward and is dependent on the behavior patterns of
the past with some modifications and changes.
Dance’s Helical Model
In 1967, Frank Dance has proposed the
communication model called Dance’s Helix
Model for a better communication process. At any
and all times, the helix gives geometrical
testimony to the concept that communication
while moving forward is at the same time coming
back upon itself and being affected by its past
behavior, for the corning curve of the helix is
fundamentally affected by the curve from which it
emerges.
● Dances model emphasized the difficulties of communication

● He developed this theory based on a simple helix which gets

bigger and bigger as it moves or grows

● The main characteristic of helical model of communication is

that it is non-linear, it is evolutionary
Strengths

Communication is continous,
unrepeatative, additive and
accumulative

The model includes

important aspects such as
intelligence, languages,
experiences from the past.
Weakness

The model cannot be tested

and is very abstract.

The goal of communication

is not always growth.
