activity 1: Who Am I?

He was a Greek Mathematician who produced the first

trigonometric table and solved problems of spherical
trigonometry. He is also known as the “Father of
Trigonometry”. Who is he?

To find out who is this mathematician, find the values

of the trigonometric ratios. Match column A to column
B, then plot your answers in the box provided below.

Trigonometric Ratios of Special Angles

What is your own definition of special? Or do you

have an object or a person you consider very
special to you?
What are trigonometric special angles?

There are specific angles that provide simple

and exact trigonometric values. These specific
angles are known as trigonometric special
angles. These are 30°, 45°, and 60°.
Special Right Triangles

1. 45o – 45o – 90o triangle — also known as

isosceles triangle — is a special triangle
with the angles 45o, 45o, and 90o.

2. 30o – 60o – 90o triangle is another

special triangle with the angles 30o, 60o,
and 90o.

Note:
• The Ratio of the side lengths is 1:1:
• If two sides of the triangle are equal,
then the angles opposite those sides
are also equal.
• BA = hypotenuse
• Hypotenuse = leg times √2

How to solve trigonometric special angles?
case 2
Based in the figure, ∆ABD ≈ ∆CBD, ∠BDA is
a right triangle, m∠A= 60° and m∠ABD =
30°.

Take note:
BD = longer leg
Hypotenuse = 2 times shorter leg
Longer leg = shorter leg times √3
The Ratio of the side lengths is 1::2

Table for the Values of Trigonometric Ratio
Example
Find the exact value of the following trigonometric expression without
using a calculator.

tan 30°– cot 60°+ tan 45°

Example
Find the exact value of the following trigonometric expression without
using a calculator.
tan 30°– cot 60°+ tan 45°
Solution:
Using the table, substitute tan 30°= , cot 60°= , tan 45° = 1
= - +1
=0+1
=1
Thus, tan 30°– cot 60°+ tan 45° = 1.
Example
Find the exact value of the following trigonometric expression without
using a calculator.

2 cos 60° + 2 csc 30° + sec 60° - sin 30°

Example
Find the exact value of the following trigonometric expression without
using a calculator.
2 cos 60° + 2 csc 30° + sec 60° - sin 30°
= 2 () + 2 (2) + 2 -
=1+4+2-
=6

Thus, 2 cos 60° + 2 csc 30° + sec 60° - sin 30° = 6
