Introduction:
• Public Works Department :
• PWD is an Indian government agency responsible
for building and maintaining public services, such
as public government construction, highways,
bridges, public transportation, drinking water
sources and more.
• It is engaged in planning, designing,
construction and maintenance of Government
assets in the field of built environment and
infrastructure development.
CERTIFICATE OF TRAINING
CONTENT
• PWD Introduction.
• Certificate of training
• Types of pavements.
• Procedure of construction pavement
• Material used .
• Tests on concrete and bitumen.
• Cement road construction.
• Preparation of subgrade, sub base ,base.
• Form work.
• Watering of base.
• Joints.
• Material mix and placing.
• Compaction.
• Finishing of surface.
• Curing.
• Filling joints.
• Edging.
• Cost to estimate.
AREA OF WORK

1. Road pavements:
• Rigid Pavement
• Flexible Pavement
2. Repairing and renovation work at block
development office.
3. Laying drainage pipes across the roads.
 Name of department: CD-1/TDZ
Procedure to construct pavement
• Survey of proposed work is done by experienced engineers
or by any expert of survey, site survey include geographical
details, soil properties and site investigation.
• After survey a team of experienced engineers and
architecture prepare detail plan of work with the help of
various softwares.
• Now excavation is done with the help of automatic
machine and then equipment is used to cut nearby trees
and root removal process.
• After the construction of soil subgrade ,base course and
the construction of surface course is done.
MATERIAL USED IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS

• Bitumen:
VG10(80/100)
VG30(60/70)
VG40(30/40)
• Macadam
• Aggregate:
25mm-70mm
Types of Coats on Bituminous Roads

• Prime coat.
• Binder course.
• Tack coat.
• Surface course.
• Seal coat.
MATERIAL USED IN RIGID PAVEMENTS
• Cement :
Portland cement.
Portland fly ash cement.
Portland pozolona cement.
Portland silica fume cement.
• Sand.
• Aggregate:
Coarse aggregate
Fine aggregate
Finishing Of Surface
• Floating:
For levelling the surface use floating ,screeding ,
Power trowel. So that there is no acceptable more
than 3 mm variation in concrete level surface.
• Belting:
For making surface clean used belting process.
Belt is nothing but a 15 to 30 cm thick sheets of
canvass which have more length than road.
• Brooming:
Brooming is a process in which we made rough
Surface parallel to road by brush. It is useful in avoiding
slip and comfortable travelling on road .the depth of
line on road no more than 1.5mm .
Test on concrete and bitumen
• Test to be done on concrete:
• The slump test.
• Compression test.
• Impact test.
• Cube test.
• CBR test.
• Plate bearing test.
• Ductility .
• Flash and fire point test.
• Softening point .
• Stripping value.
Machineries used
• Tractor
• Bull dozer.
• Dumper
• Asphalt splitting
machine.
• Concrete paver.
• Road roller.
Site of working:

• Bituminous repairments at Vijay Nagar Road.

(from Kaka ji Garden to Sahil Royal Garden) on
29th june 2022.

• Concrete joints repairment at Samarth Marg.

(In Jaipur House Colony) on 5th july 2022.
Cost Abstraction of Machines Used
Equipments Machine Hours Machine Rates Total cost
Tractor 2 720 INR 1440 INR
Bull Dozer 1 600 INR 600 INR
Dumper 2 650 INR 1300 INR
Concrete paver 3 550 INR 1650 INR
Road roller 2 850 INR 1700 INR

Sub total=12090 INR

Total cost in machines is calculating the unit cost by formula:

Unit cost=machine rate /production rate
Production rate is calculated by the estimation method
This method of estiamtion is only applied when a complete contract is given to
private contractor but not used when a machine is required for repairing purpose for
hours.
Cost Abstraction Of Material used
Material Quantity Rate Cost
Aggergate 308 cubic ft 55 / cubic ft 16940 INR
Sand 154 cubic ft 58/ cubic ft 8932 INR
Cement 64 bags 350 per bags 22400 INR
Steel 7.85 quintal 60 / kg 47100 INR
Binding Wires 1.5 kg 65 / kg 97 INR

Generally aggregate size of 20mm,25mm to 70 mm are used in

subgrade , sub base and base formation.

Bitumen used for road construction is purchased from either IOCL and
HPCL from cost ranging from 2450 per barrel to 2320 per barrel

Sub Total = 95469 INR

Cost Abstraction of Labours and Others
Labour Quantity Rate Cost
Mistri 2 500 INR 250 INR
Mason 3 400 INR 1200 INR
Mazdoor 12 300 INR 3600 INR

Sub total for 1 day = 5050 INR

Subtotal for 12 days= 12*5050=60600 INR

Total Cost of all repair and maintainance pavements

=1,68,159 INR
Conclusion
• The whole experience of my training with PWD was full of learning and I
tried to extract all the possible aspects of new road construction. In this
training I observed the basics of construction techniques:
• Learn about laying of bituminous mix, and maintenance of road pavement.
• Know about properties of aggregate and bitumen
• Understand about failure factors in pavement (proper mixing, temperature,
weather condition etc.)
• ASTM( American Society for Testing and material )and AASHTO (American
Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) standard codes
are used for test on bitumen and concrete.
• Financed by MORTH( Ministry of Road Transport and Highway).
• M 30 grade of concrete is used in rural areas with slump of 60mm.
• IRC specification are used for development of roads in India.
• Grade of C/c Road depends upon traffic volume per hour.
