Back Panel Connectors & Ports
Connectors and ports
for connecting the
computer to external
devices
• i.e. display ports,
audio ports, USB
ports, Ethernet ports,
etc.
• Peripheral PCI Slots
Component
Interconnect
• Used to
insert/install
expansion/add-on
cards
Northbridge
Chipset
• Chipset that
allows the CPU
to
communicate
with the RAM
and graphics
card
Southbridge
Chipset
• Chipset that allows
the CPU to
communicate with
PCI slots, SATA
connectors (hard
drives), USB ports,
Ethernet ports and
on-board audio.
• Used to CPU Socket
hold the
processor
or CPU
ATX 12 V Power Connector
• Connects to the
4-pin power
cable of a
power supply
unit which
supplies power
to the CPU
IDE Connector
• Connects to older hard drive disks
and optical drives for data transfer

SATA Connector
 Connects to modern hard disk drives and optical drives
 this connector is use to connect the IDE cable of the
HDD(Hard Disk Drive) or CD/DVD ROM to the Mother
Board IDE
Fan Headers
• Supplies
power to the
CPU heat
sink fan and
computer
case fans
RAM Slots

• Allows the
computer
memory to be
inserted into the
computer.
ATX Power Connector
• Connects to the
24-pin ATX
power cable of
a power supply
unit which
supplies power
to the
motherboard.
CMOS Battery
• Complementary Metal-Oxide
Semiconductor. CMOS is an on-
board, battery powered
semiconductor chip inside
computers that stores information.
• Supplies power to store BIOS
settings and keep the real-time
clock running. CMOS battery
found on most motherboard is the
CR2032 lithium coin cell.
Activity 1
