Main Challenges on the Way of Developing Compact
Terahertz System:
 Lack of efficient terahertz emitter.  Lack of low loss terahertz waveguide
 Most of materials available for
conventional fiber fabrication is prone
to high absorption loss.
 Large core diameter of the terahertz
fibers leads to multimode propagation.
 High bending loss of terahertz
waveguides restricts the high density
integration.

Objectives:

The key objective of this thesis work is to propose an

efficient terahertz waveguide that will assure:
 Low absorption loss of the guided medium
 Strong confinement of the guided modes in wavelength These objectives are met with
the implementation of
scale core diameter Hyperbolic Metamaterial
 Small bending loss associated with sharp bent radii (HMM) in the proposed
 Single mode behavior terahertz fiber
 High core power fraction

Hyperbolic Metamaterial:
Hyperbolic iso-frequency Synthetic type of material with unusual material properties
surface due to its crafted microstructure, not for material composition
Reason behind the hyperbolic iso-surface:
Opposite sign of the transverse (εt ) and Anisotropic Material Property:
longitudinal component (εz ) of the permittivity ε
tensor. For example: εt =2.25 and εz =-100.

Achievements of the Proposed Model:
 To best of my knowledge, the numerical simulation of implementing hyperbolic metamaterial with metal coating
in the cladding air holes has been done for the very first time in this thesis work.
 Strong confinement of TM1 mode in wavelength scale core diameter
 Single mode window: 0.22 THz to 0.34 THz
 Loss: Minimum loss occurs at core diameter equals to the operating wavelength. At 0.3 THz, the transmission loss
is 0.23 dB/cm .
 Bending loss: 0.28 dB/cm at bend radii 5 cm
 Core power fraction: 96.8%
 Application: High speed data transfer, in particle accelerator to accelerate the relativistic electron bunches etc.

21
Future Scopes
 The proposed fiber has a single-mode transmission window of 0.12 THz. The
operational range of the single-mode region can be improved.

 The radially polarized transverse magnetic mode (TM 1) offers comparatively

low coupling efficiency. Instead of the radially polarized wave, if the fiber
supports the linearly polarized wave, it could be a potential achievement.

 This fiber can be implemented for gas sensing applications. The low refractive
index of the gases results in week confinement of light in the fiber core. Thus,
the light-gas interaction reduces and the sensitivity becomes low. The
proposed fiber offers 96.8% of the total power confined in the core and it’s an
indication of the potentiality of this type of fibers as gas sensors.
