VOCABULARY
INEQUALITY
compares two values, showing if one is less than,
greater than, or simply not equal to another value.

a ≠ b says that a is not equal to b

VEE TEACH CHANNEL GRADE 9 MATHEMATICS Vee Teach Channel

VOCABULARY
INEQUALITY
a < b says that a is less than b
a > b says that a is greater than b
(those two are known as strict inequality)

a ≤ b means that a is less than or equal to b

a ≥ b means that a is greater than or equal to b.

ACTIVITY
Identify if it is quadratic inequality or not

(2x – 3) (x + 2) > 0
𝟐 𝟐
𝟑 𝐱 +𝟏𝟖<𝟑 ( 𝐱 – 𝟒 𝐱)

Identify if it is quadratic inequality or not

(2x – 3) (x + 2) > 0
multiply the first term (2x) of the
2+ 4x – 3x – 6 > 0
first parenthesis to the second term
(2) of the second parenthesis
add or combined the same terms 2+ x – 6 > 0
(4x – 3x), then the sum is x
therefore, 2 + x – 6 > 0 is a quadratic inequality with a = 2, b =
1, and c = -6

Identify if it is quadratic inequality or not
𝟐 𝟐
𝟑 𝐱 +𝟏𝟖<𝟑 ( 𝐱 – 𝟒 𝐱)
distribute 3 to the ( – 4x) 3 + 18 < 3 – 12x
transpose the 3 – 12x to the other 3 - 3 + 12x + 18 < 0
side

combined like terms 3 – 3 0 + 12x + 18 < 0

Therefore, 12x + 18 < 0 is not a quadratic inequality because a

should not equal 0

Quadratic Inequalities
Quadratic inequality contains a polynomial of degree 2 and can
be written in any of the following forms:

𝟐 𝟐
𝐚𝐱 +𝐛𝐱 +𝐜> 𝟎 𝐚𝐱 +𝐛𝐱 +𝐜 ≥ 𝟎
𝟐 𝟐
𝐚𝐱 +𝐛𝐱 +𝐜< 𝟎 𝐚𝐱 +𝐛𝐱 +𝐜 ≤ 𝟎

Quadratic Inequalities

Any letters can be used as variables, a letter or

variable that has a second–degree power or exponent
(, , , ) with the symbols of inequality such as >, <, ≥,
and ≤ are considered quadratic inequalities.
