Exploring the Filipinization of the

English Language in a
Digital Age: An Identity Apart from
Other World Englishes

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
 Aimed to investigate the process of Filipinization of
the English Language particularly in the context of the
digital age and examines how this process contributes to
the development of a distinct identity in Philippine English
that sets it apart from other World Englishes.
RESEARCH PROBLEMS:
 How are the lexical features of Philippine English described with regard to the use of nouns, lexical verbs,
adverbs and adjectives?
 How are the grammatical features of Philippine English described with regard to the use of prepositions,
pronouns, auxiliary verbs, articles, and conjunctions?
 What are the dominant lexical and grammatical features of Philippine English in terms of the frequencies?
 What are the graphological substances present in each tweets?
 What are the sentence patterns and sentence structures employed in each tweet?
 What are the different Filipinized idioms translated in English and lexical innovations present in the
selected tweets?
 What are the distinctive features of Philippine English as a dialect of International English based on
graphology, syntax and lexical semantics?
METHODOLOGY
 The study was a descriptive study and a quantitative type of research.
 Purposive sampling technique.
 30 selected respondents were chosen from Twitter. This concludes for a total
of 30 respondents were used as the sample in this research, and a total of 60
tweets were examined in this study.
 The tweets were selected according to their availability, validity; and more
importantly, the sentences involved were constructed in plain Philippine
English and tweeted during the period April 2017 to March 2018, thus
covering a one-year span.
FINDINGS/RESULTS Analysis of lexical features (Content words)

 In the noun category, singular noun was more prominent than plural noun,
while count noun was the most notable among the other types of nouns.
 In the adverb category, the Adverb of time had the highest usage among
the other types of adverbs.
 In the adjective category, The dominating type of adjective was descriptive
adjective and the most prominent type of degree was positive.
FINDINGS/RESULTS Analysis of grammatical features (Function words)

 In the Preposition category, Simple preposition was the most dominant

type employed.
 In the pronoun category, personal pronoun was the most prominent .
 In the auxiliary verb category, 14 different forms appeared in the
tweets.
In the conjunction category, coordinating conjunction was the most
dominant.
FINDINGS/RESULTS Linguistic analysis at the graphological level
 Punctuations and spelling differed on those that were expected in International
English.
The respondents were found to use the method of clipping and affixing executed in
their tweets, which results coinage.

 FINDINGS/RESULTS Linguistic Analysis at the Syntactical Level
 The respondents’ tweets revealed “ Philippine Type Patterning”. This
claim is proved by the respondent’s employment of the predicate first-
sentence patterns, which are common in Tagalog’s canonical word order
and would not typically be seen in native English speakers.
• Stringy elements,Wordiness,Inverted order of subject and predicate
• Dependent clause, Simple sentence,Compund sentence, complex sentence,
compound complex sentence.
FINDINGS/RESULTS Linguistic analysis at the lexical semantic level
 In lexical semantic level, English translations of Filipinized idioms and
vocabulary innovations were found in the tweets. This highlighted the "transfer"
of culture and meaning from the Filipino native tongue to international English.

CONCLUSIONS
Based on the findings, this study has proven that Philippine English
differ and has distinct features from American English and other world
Englishes.
It is assumed that modernization has its implications in localizing
English.
Philippine English will continue to develop more innovative features.
REACTIONS

Focuses on the impact of Filipino culture on the English language in the
digital age, which is a relatively unexplored area.
Offers a new perspective and adds to the existing body of information in the
topic by exploring the Filipinization of English.
Design exhibits a systematic and rigorous methodology
It demonstrates how Filipinization of English may act as a symbol of
cultural identity and give a platform for Filipinos to communicate their
distinct thoughts and experiences.
IMPLICATIONS/RECOMMENDATIONS
Understanding the Filipinization of English can help to build appropriate language teaching
approaches that recognize and respect the specific linguistic traits of Filipino English users.
 As teachers, this study suggests that teachers must consider the unique features and variations
of Philippine English and consider it as also a basis for students evaluation.
Syntactical and semantic characteristics of Philippine English should no longer be seen as
errors but as emerging feature that differ Philippine English from other World Englishes.
 Use non native English Literature to expose the students to the actual use of English varieties.
